“When 9-11 happened, the world changed.” A lot of people have made this statement. It has been used to justify all sorts of current world policy—not all of it very pretty, democratic, nor free. Hundreds of billions of dollars have been spent in reaction from security at the Olympics to airport luggage scanners. Most startling and tragic of all, however, is the resurgence of anti-Semitism tied to 9-11. In his documentary, Protocols of Zion, director Michael Levin attempts to get at the source of this resurgence and try to understand it. He starts with an investigation into the myth, spread all over the world, nearly moments after the planes collided with the twin towers that there were no Jewish people killed in the attack. In fact, emails and web sites began reporting that 4000 Jewish people failed to show up for work that day as if they had been pre-warned of the attacks. Of course, this is absolutely FALSE. Many, many hundreds of Jewish people were killed who worked at the World Trade Center. Yet, as Mr. Levin discovers, there are millions of people around the world who still believe this including thousands of people in the United States. The belief seems to be rooted in a fake propaganda tool created by the Russian Secret Police called The Protocols of Zion released to smear the reputation of the Jewish people and propagate anti-Semitism. The booklet of protocols has been circulating ever since and its re-publication in the US has been on the rise of late. It is horrifying to think that people will believe this hoax and participate in the spreading of lies and hatred about any group of people on a planet that has the potential to bring so much good to the universe if only we would stop fighting each other and start working to make this planet a beacon of hope for humanity and civilization in the galaxy. Continuing, Mr. Levin uses his film to help explore the sources of anti-Semitism in general in the world, the conflicts between Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. He does an interesting job at this, though, sometimes I felt as if he was wandering a bit from topic to topic without really putting any closure on each or tying the together in a meaningful way. His film reads a bit like a young student’s first attempt at an essay. He has his thesis statement set out, but the paragraphs that follow do not seem well tied to each other nor necessarily back to the thesis statement. This leaves some room for confusion and decreases the power of the film. Nonetheless, I would recommend seeing this film because it represents another example of the incredible amount of work we have to do as a species in order to deserve to be blessed with beauty and bounty of this great earth.
