This is the second review for She’s the Man, as avid readers of movieEVERYday.com will no doubt notice. As I have written before, sometimes circumstances will warrant this, and if you knew anything about my yesterday, you would be all the more understanding. One of the interesting things about seeing and reviewing a movie for a second time within a relatively short time frame is that it afford opportunities to pay attention to ancillary characters and smaller points in greater detail. So, this review will focus on the little guys. Please see the original review for a more general or holistic review, general plot points, etc.
The cast, beyond the main stars, is made of some stand out actors that really add to the depth of the story. I admire, greatly, the actors that take smaller parts and really build depth of character into them. She’s the Man is full of these. Briefly…
Justin (Viola’s ex-boyfriend) portrayed by Robert Hoffman
Born in 1980 in Gainesville, FL, Robert Hoffman’s career has included roles as a dancer in Coach Carter, a skeleton in Pirates of the Caribbean, and a beach dancer in Gigli. Clearly, his dance background and raw athleticism adds to his ability to play the Elyria Prep rival soccer goalie from Cornwall Academy. As the only pseudo villain in the film, he must find himself saying and doing things that are entirely counter to his true self. He does this well and with enough good looks and charm to cause Viola’s mother to swoon and momentarily contemplate dating him when Viola dumps him.
Paul (Viola’s hairdresser best friend) played by Jonathan Sadowski
Jonathan Sadowski brings a fresh enthusiasm to his minor, but nonetheless very instrumental role as the change agent who helps Viola assume the identity of her brother, Sebastian. From his creation of faux side burns, bushier eyebrows, and the page-boy hair piece and the coaching he provides Paul makes it possible for her to pass. As a B.F.A. in Theatre from the University of Illinois and a native of Chicago, he really nails this character and makes him fun without being flamboyant or stereotypical.
Daphne (Viola’s and Sebastian’s prim and proper mom) portrayed by Julie Hagerty
Stretching all the way back to the farce film classic Airplane!, Julie Hagerty has brought her own personal style to decades worth of films. This time around, she must play a character that pushes the feminist movement back 50 years with her focus on woman as ruffled-dress wearing debutants. She does so with believability and some antiquated yet relevant moxie.
Coach Dinklage (Viola’s new soccer coach at Elyria Prep) captured by Vinnie Jones
When you first see Coach Dinklage, you are likely to wonder, “Where have I seen that guy before?” The role I most remember him from was that of Bullet Tooth Tony from the excellent Guy Ritchie film Snatch. Here he plays the tough-as-nails, British-imported, boys soccer coach. It is clear that he did a phenomenal job with this role for the chemistry he achieves with his fellow cast mates exudes from every pore in the kids on his team. He brings about the raw yet supportive style of really good coaches. He is made of steel, yet he has a real passion and love for the game and for the kids on his team. In the end, it is he that stands up for Viola’s right to play on the boys soccer team cementing his position as Coach of the Year.
Principal Gold (the head of Elyria Prepatory School) played by David Cross
It is hard to picture anyone else in this role. David Cross, a veteran of stage and screen of more than 30 years, carries the overly spunky, overly cordial, somewhat freaky principal of the school to a tee. Having some experience with private school heads, I can safely say he is unlike any I have actually known. Still, he is hilarious and makes it clear he cares a lot about the school and the students. He has a real talent for saying nearly the wrong thing at the wrong time. Mr. Cross has a real knack for playing this character.
Eunice (the girl with extreme braces, pink high-top Converse® All-Stars, and a not-so-secret love for Sebastian) played by Emily Perkins
A veteran of mostly tv shows, this is one of Ms Perkins’s largest major motion picture roles. Here she dons some extensive orthodontic head gear and takes on the character of the less than gallant Eunice. To make it work, the character required some inner understanding of the passion that gets all pent up in a garish, nerdy person just waiting to be unleashed at the right moment. In this case, it will take a long time to wash from my mind the incredibly maniacal and lust-driven look on her face the morning after she hosts her dream ‘man’ Sebastian overnight in her room and makes him a cupcake for breakfast. She does a really terrific job creating this character and bringing her to life.
These were brief snippets of some of the finer minor roles from the film. The process of researching and writing these reminded me that there are literally thousands of people that work behind the scences let alone on screen to make a movie. From the gaffer to the best boy to the stunt players to the effects editors, and on and on, these are the unsung heroes of the industry. So, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to stop and take a moment and just say ‘thanks’ to all of the ‘little’ people that work to bring a movie to your local theater. Please, please, please remember that every single one of these people has a family to feed, bills to pay, etc. Therefore, please do continue to support them all by going out to the movies and by never illegally downloading movies or music! Thank you!
