Despite the effervescence and good-natured comedy of Ellen DeGeneres – the Dame Judi Dench joke aside – this year, the AMPAAS put on a decidedly dull show. The speeches, with the exception of Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren, were lack luster, the presenters often had bad or no chemistry, and the whole affair looked a bit more like an eco-peace rally than a gala to recognize achievement in film. One hypothesis is that everyone was hiding out realizing they made some very big errors in the nomination pool having had to rush things forward for this much earlier-in-the-year award show, and there were some serious errors in the nominations, notably three of the best pictures of the year were not nominated for best picture: Pan's Labyrinth, Notes on a Scandal, and Little Children.

In any case, as I watched, I made predictions for each award. I did a lot better when I tried to think like the voters who obviously don't vote on talent alone, but also along lines of obligations.

Biggest Surprises:

•Babel won almost no awards. Despite being labeled the Crash of 2006, which it was no way nearly as good as Crash, the voters who had decided to throw away nominations on this film avoided it like the plague on the final ballot.

•Dreamgirls received no musical awards.

•Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren were the best actors of the year, and they won the awards. It's too bad the voters weren't this dead on with all of the awards. Admittedly, some were very hard to call. The supporting actors and actresses, for example, were nearly impossible this year.

•The Academy took a decidedly, attract the positive rather than emphasize the negative, by nearly avoiding any references to current political climates or the ongoing trouble in Iraq, hot topics for the three previous years and despite numerous incredible documentaries on the subject. This year it was all about global warming. Does this mean the assumption is a switch in Congress will fix all that ails us so there's no need for concern?

Biggest Disappointments:
•Ellen wasn't more Elle-esque.
•Will and Jack attack
•Too long with too little going on
•The commercials—except, of course, the one for the new Apple iPhone coming in June.
•February date—too early, ruins the anticipation and traditional March parties, had no bearing on the impact of the awards or the announcements to trump other awards which were still already given out long ago.
•Film clips often were not the best choices
•Pointless film montages
•Commercialism—The Departed was not even close to the best film of the year, and this was not even close to Scorsese's best film.

Best Ideas:
•Pilobolus (except the Snakes on a Plane part)
•Actually showcasing the costumes on real people
•The opening with words from the nominees
