A unique new brand of British comedy crosses the pond again on the heels of the success of Shaun of the Dead and the talents of writer / director Edgar Wright and writer / actor Simon Pegg in the form of comedic murder mystery set in a small, English hamlet and called Hot Fuzz. The title refers to the police as in the rural police department where Sergeant Nicholas Angle (Simon Pegg) is relocated after it seems his London job is burning him out.

"…Hot Fuzz is a fun and outlandish action film with great acting, devilish plot, and good humor."
Angel arrives in the ordinary and picturesque town to find the Stepford-style community may not be as idyllic as it seems. His assigned partner is Danny (Nick Frost), a local beat cop with a penchant for sweets, pints, and American movies. The town is not eager to have new police protection, especially the don't know how to take Nick Angel who comes in an starts actually enforcing the laws of the land. Meanwhile, Nick has lost track of himself, how to have fun, and the value of friendship. As the two 'buddy' cops begin to bond—not an easy accomplishment—the town folk start turning up dead. Nick Angel finds the deaths alarming and possibly homicides, while Danny seems to feel they are in a long line of accidental deaths the town has endured for as long as he can remember. What ensues is an incredibly funny homage to USA-buddy cop films with a decidedly wicked streak added by Pegg and Wright.

The story stands out due to great characterizations notably by Angel himself, Nick Frost as Danny Buttermann, Jim Broadbent as Inspector Frank Butterman (the chief of Police and Danny's father), and Timothy Dalton as the town's shrewdest businessman and grocery story magnate, Simon Skinner. The highly creative and inventive style of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, delivers viewers right into the thick of things. The characters' baggage is revealed as the story progresses giving greater insight into their motivations as events unfold. This style works well especially when juxtaposed with their great sense of comedic timing and development. The evolution of the relationship between partners Butterman and Angel takes its own time and aptly follows the same course as its many buddy cop film predecessors. Eventually, mutual respect and trust develops as the two attempt to unravel a dark secret that has gripped the town and all of its inhabitants for decades. Sharply directed and acted, Hot Fuzz is a very good film with a couple of exceptions. The plot twist, unfortunately, has been recycled a few times already this year which decreases the novelty a bit. Nonetheless, Hot Fuzz is a fun and outlandish action film with great acting, devilish plot, and good humor. It's difficult not to enjoy it even with the derivative plot angles.
