The Characters: (a breakdown)

Bradley Thomas (Greg Kinnear):
Owns a coffee shop with the best espresso in town, that according to best friend and the story's narrator, Harry Stevenson (Morgan Freeman).
Gets dumped by his first partner, Kathryn (Selma Blair) who leaves him for another woman.
Gets dumped by his second partner, Diana (Radha Mitchell) who leaves him for David Watson (Billy Burke) with whom she was having an affair—he's married, she's not—up until the day of accepting Bradley's marriage proposal.
Subsequently stabs himself in the finger with a kitchen knife so that he can feel in the rest of his body, the kind of pain he feels in his heart, or so he tells Dr. Vekashi (Erika Marozsán) in the emergency room. The two subsequently fall in love. Maybe this one will last.

Harry Stevenson (Morgan Freeman):
He's the best friend of Bradley. He's also able to see when people are falling into true love—something of which Bradley is incapable.
He's taken a leave of absence from his professorship due to a recent tragedy in his family. His son died of a heroine overdoes. He and his lovely wife, Esther (Jane Alexander), both were unaware of their son's drug habit. He is still grieving at the expense of his love for his wife.
He spills the beans of his sadness to Chloe (Alexa Davalos) at Bradley and Diana's wedding. She asks him if he and Esther will be her and Oscar's adoptive parents because neither has good parents. He doesn't really respond because he thinks she just humoring him. He doesn't know that she's convinced that Oscar is going to die soon, and she will really need parents to help her.
After Oscar dies, he shows up at their house, and beats up Bat (Fred Ward) who's there and ready to kill Chloe with his hunting knife. He kicks the crap out of the drunken fool and tells him if he ever shows up again he'll kill him. He then tells Chloe he's sorry he took so long to respond, but he and Esther would love to be her surrogate parents and give all the love they have left to her and Oscar's baby.

Diana (Radha Mitchell):
She's been having an affair of sex and expensive wine with David Watson since she sold him and his wife their new house two years ago. When she announces that she's engaged to Bradley, he flips his lid. Obviously he's going to miss the sex, but he may also actually be in love with her. He tells her she's making the biggest mistake of her life. He questions her love as there she is having sex with him on the same day Bradley has proposed to her. What kind of woman is she? She keeps his expensive dress shirt which pops up in the story again later.
She marries Bradley, and they move into the house next to Harry and Esther. Esther is worried since the last three couples that moved into this 'cursed' house all moved out separated. She doesn't want this to happen to Bradley and Diana.
Bradley and Diana get invited to a party. In looking for something to wear to the party in he closet, she complains to Bradley that she cannot find half her stuff since she moved in. She accuses him of losing a box. She seems icy and cold. As she digs through the closet, she finds David's shirt and puts it on. She plans to wear it even though it's way too big. As the fates would have it, David and his wife, Karen (Julie Vhay) are in attendance at the same party. Karen rushes over to the familiar face of her realtor whom she's not seen in two years. Relatively quickly she recognizes the shirt. She flees to confront Bradley.
She moves out of the house, separated from Bradley, making the curse seem all the more like it's real. David Watson (Billy Burke):
When Karen confronts him, he then goes to let Diana know how stupid it was for her to be wearing his shirt. It was a gift of Karen with the exact same missing button from the button-down collar. She shrugs him off. After all, he was cheating on Karen, not her (though of course, she knew he was married).
Two days later, he separates from Karen. He runs into Diana again, and lo and behold, now that he's no longer married, Diana finds him irresistible. They kiss in the park under the watchful eyes of Oscar and Chloe, who, of course, have to tell Bradley what they've seen.
The next thing you know, these two new love birds are happy as can be, and Bradley actually becomes friends with them as he's now found his true love in Margaret.

Oscar (Toby Hemingway):
He's the coffee guy at Bradley's coffee shop.
His mom's gone, and his father, Bat (Fred Ward), is an alcoholic. He still lives at home.
When Chloe (Alexa Davalos) enters the coffee shop looking for a job, he convinces Bradley to hire her. Well, actually, Harry seals the deal because he explains that if Bradley doesn't hire Chloe, he'll lose Oscar and never be able to leave to go and get the dog for Kathryn he's convinced she'll love even though she hates dogs.
Oscar falls in love immediately with Chloe, and the two begin to hang out, date, have relations, and get into trouble with both Bat and Chloe's roommate. They decide to get their own place.
Oscar is a former drug addict, Chloe spots this immediately in him. He got clean 7.5 months ago when he had a weird dream and a little guy told him in his ear that he was going to die if he didn't stop. He went to his first meeting the next day.
Oscar speaks of his perfect future which will be a huge house with a foyer and plenty of money to pay all their bills.
Oscar marries Chloe because she asks him to, and he loves her like no other.
Unfortunately, he dies suddenly during a touch football game in the park with David and Bradley and others. Everyone is there. When he catches the ball, he falls flat on his face having just scored a touch down. No one really notices, until he never gets up. Dr. Margaret is present and rushes over immediately. She begins CPR and gets a pulse. They move him into the back of Bradley's station wagon and she alerts the hospital. Unfortunately, it is homecoming weekend, and they get trapped in traffic. He dies in the car before their eyes.

Chloe (Alexa Davalos):
Chloe tells Oscar her perfect future would be her waiting at the top of the stairs for him to get home and having him run to hug all their many children.
Chloe convinces Oscar to make a porn tape with her to make them some money so they can make their perfect futures come to life. The tape brings fewer than $450 of the $1000 for which she was hoping. Clearly this isn't their future.
She suspects that something is wrong in her life with Oscar, but she doesn't know what. So, of course, she goes to see Mrs. Maggarolian (Margo Martindale) the fortuneteller. She starts with Chloe's palms and asks when the boy she loves died. Chloe explains he's still alive. So, she quickly turns to the Tarot cards and pulls the death card on the fourth or fifth card. She's sad, but she tells Chloe that she can change the future and save Oscar from his fate.
She rushes home and immediately asks Oscar to marry her. He's so happy, he agrees on the spot.
The two have an amazing wedding, and Chloe tells Harry that she's going to follow his advice and have a kid right away and then another. Harry is so happy.
She moves into their new little rental house with Oscar. She has put up a sign on the porch that reads "Foyer".
After Oscar dies, and Harry offers to become her surrogate family, she accepts. All is well.
