The Ending:
'Safe' in the Utilidor, the few remaining members of the town, watch out the window as their town goes up in flames. Marlow (Danny Huston), the leader of the clan, realizes that it's best if the outside world sees this as a case of the town falling victim to some freak accidental oil leak and fire. As Stella (Melissa George) and the young child she's trying to rescue hide beneath a truck just outside, Eben (Josh Hartnett) makes the ultimate sacrifice to save them. As a vampire gets into the Utilidor, they take him on, and Billy Kitka (Manu Bennett) tosses him into the shredder. Unfortunately, Billy has been cut and infected. Before he can complete the change, Eben decapitates him. Then realizing the only way to save Stella is to create a distraction by fighting the remaining vampires, Eben takes a syringe of Billy's blood and injects it into his arm. There is discussion as to whether they should kill him before he changes, but his brother Jake (Mark Rendall) stops them. As he converts, somehow he maintains himself and goes out to fight Marlow. The other vampires watch as he attacks him, but Marlow is too strong. He beats Eben to a pulp. In one last bit of fury, Eben punches his hand through the back of Marlow's head killing him. The other vampires, noting that the sun is about to arrive, flee the town. Stella and the child are saved. The final scene is of Eben and Stella huddled together for the fatal first sunrise that will turn Eben to ash. We watch as his flesh is seared, and the paper-thin layers of who used to be the town's most brave citizen turn to dust.
