The Story:Jude (Jim Sturgess) leaves Liverpool to find his G.I. father who abandoned his mother when he was in the womb. He find him on the campus of Princeton repairing a window—he's now a custodian for the campus. He's not too happy to see Jude since he's married and has two kids. At Princeton, Jude happens to befriend Max Carrigan (Joe Anderson) who then pals around with him and introduces him to life in the States. He invites Jude home for Thanksgiving dinner where he meets Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood). This is where the two fall in love, though they cannot connect it up until after Lucy's boyfriend, is killed abroad. Lucy, Max, and Jude all end up in a common apartment in NYC after Max bails on college. Their land-lady is Sadie (Dana Fuchs) who watches over them like a family while carrying on her own singing career with newly discovered guitarist, JoJo (Martin Luther). Prudence (T.V. Carpio) rounds out the sextet as a cheerleader fromOhio who longs for love in the big apple—not to be confused with the big strawberry thatJude paints later to be the logo for Sadie's record company and becomes the theme of the film inspired, of course, by "Strawberry Fields". After dropping out of college, Max, of course, gets almost instantly drafted. Before he goes, the group ends up on a psychedelic bus with Dr. Robert (Bono) and a cross-country tour that has them as high as they can fly with Mr. Kite's circus. Max tries to evade the draft by following techniques suggested by friends to get him out of service, but an amazing cinematic sequence starting with "I Want You" and Uncle Sam leaping off the poster to pull him into the examination process bearing some resemblance to a gigantic Rube Goldberg machine, eventually places him on active duty in the jungles of Vietnam. While he's gone, Sadie and Jojo break up, Lucy gets involved in war activism to the exclusion of Jude in her life, Prudence disappears as she's so distraught at the loss of Max, and eventually, Jude and Lucy come to part ways after he fights with her activist group while singing "Revolution" to her. He comes to his senses eventually, and tries to stop her from getting arrested at a protest only to find himself behind bars, bailed out by his father, and then deported back to England. Max gets injured and returned home safely to the USA. Once out of the hospital, Max goes to drink in a bar at the same time that Jude is drinking in a pub in Liverpool. Via reflections in the mirrors, Max convinces Jude to come back to the USA and to find Lucy with whom he's meant to be. Everything is set up so that Lucy and Jude will meet up. The gang's all back together on a rooftop in NYC singing, but the cops come to break up the disturbance, and Lucy misses out on Jude—that is until he hides out on the rooftop and then takes the mic and sings "All You Need is Love" to her himself. She hears him, starts singing, and climbs to the top of another building to see him since the cops won't let her in the building he's on. It's a very happy ending.
