Well, the story is based on an historical novel by Ron Hansen.
The ending
Just as was reported by Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) via a letter describing how he killed Jesse James (Brad Pitt), Bob was worried that, after reading all about the confession of Dick Liddil (Paul Schneider) in the morning paper, Jesse would figure out that he was there to betray him. He's so consumed with feelings of guilt for plotting to overthrow his hero; he retires quickly and oddly to the living room. Moments later, Jesse enters, removes his gun belt, and rises on a chair to dust a picture. Bob draws his pistol and shoots him in the back of the head killing him almost instantly. Jesse James topples off onto the floor. Bob and his brother, Charley (Sam Rockwell) then proceed to the telegram station to inform the governor of their actions. Jesse's body is put on display, photographs are sold, and Bob and Charley end up performing the re-enactment of Jesse's death for audiences in New York. When it becomes clear to the brothers that they are being treated like cowards, they flee. Bob takes to drinking, and he is eventually assassinated himself by a lone gunman with a shotgun in Creede, Colorado in his tent saloon.
