Given the false chronology of the film, it's difficult to spoil. The film semi-spoils it's own ending early on. Moreover, the film is based on the true life story of Christopher McCandless played by Emile Hirsch in the film, and many people already know what happened to him.

Christopher McCandless aka Alex Supertramp, arrived at his final destination, the long-awaited Alaskan frontier. He wanted to be completely alone and free to live and think in utter peace and solitude. He wanted no material possessions, no money, no insurance, no pollution, just himself, some food, and life in the raw wilderness. And, that is exactly what he got. Though, he did live out the remainder of his short life in an abandoned bus, which to purists, will seem a bit like cheating. Unfortunately, he made several grave errors despite his brilliant college education. First, he failed to comprehend that when the summer comes, the snow melts making the small creeks into roaring rivers and therefore impassable. This effectively trapped him. Second, he gravely underestimated two things: his need for food and his need for companionship. Which was more responsible for his eventual death is uncertain because had he had companionship he might not have done the series of things that led to his virtually inevitable demise. As he grew colder, and hungrier, and his food began to run out, he sought the out his trusty field guide to find some edible plants. Unfortunately, he would discover too late that he had made a mistake in identifying one of the local plants and instead had been ingesting a poisonous one that kills you slowly over time. He kept eating and eating it as it was in abundance until he started to get sick. But, but then, he was too dehydrated, too malnourished, and too exhausted, to overcome his mistake. His choice to be as far away from human civilization made the chance of being found or getting help very slim. His body was found by hunters weeks after he died. All that remained where his journals and messages carved into everything.
