From where we left off in the plot summary in the non-spoiler review…
Will (Alexander Ludwig) must find six signs. All but one are made to look like ordinary substances: metal, stone (the one he bought for Gwen just happened to be one of them), and water. The sixth, however, is most mysterious as it need not be found because it has never been hidden from him. Hmm. So, he goes about collecting these without too much help from the Old Ones. He borders on just planning to give up. He cannot tell his family about any of this, but yet two of them get co-opted into going along for the ride. The Rider (Christopher Eccleston) enlists a beautiful girl (who is actually an old witch) to get the signs from Will. She dates his brother, James (Drew Tyler Bell) and tries to worm her way in to the Stanton family. She gets him to trust her somewhat by claiming to be a protector of him and blowing up cool fractal patterns in salt crystals in front of his eyes. But, for some reason, Will never asks the Old Ones about her or even mentions her to them. They seem oblivious to her, and you would think they would have sensed her a mile away. He also eventually corrupts Max (Gregory Smith) by taking over his mind and trying to get him to get the signs from Max. All his plans fail. After accumulating the fifth sign apparently made of either glass or water, Will must face The Rider who has now gained full strength. Will and the Old Ones all gather in the Ancient Hall back in time after narrowly escaping death by icicles formed in their mansion—present day—and formed by The Rider who, while unable to enter their compound, was able to manipulate water to the ceilings and freeze it into dangerously sharp icicles ready to fall on the entire sleeping Stanton family on the floor below. The Rider cannot enter the Great Hall without invitation, so he mimics the voices of Will's father and mother. Eventually, he caves in and opens the door effectively inviting The Rider and his darkness in. The Old Ones are virtually powerless against him. Only The Seeker has enough power to defeat The Rider. The problem is that he's not found the final sign. The Rider is thrilled. He has a great offer for Will. He holds in his hands a snow globe containing something he knows Will will want. He will hand it over in exchange for the signs he has collected. In the globe, it turns out, of course, to be Thomas. The Rider kidnapped him at birth not realizing apparently that there were twins and that Thomas was not the seeker. Just as Will contemplates what to do, he is blasted by The Rider and the darkness. As he recoils, he thinks about the clue to the sixth sign and realizes somehow that he is the final sign. He's had it all along. So, now he battles back and takes on The Rider directly. He seals The Rider in an orb of his own which then rolls down the steps and plops into the water sinking below. The Old Ones release Thomas and introduce him to Will who then takes him home to meet his family.
