Ending Spoiler:
The wondrous ending has the long marriage of Dr. Juvenal Urbino (Benjamin Bratt) to Fermina Urbino (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) coming to a sad close when Juvanal climbs up a ladder to rescue his parrot and falls to his death. The church bells ring to accompany his soul to heaven in song, but also alert Florentino Ariza (Javier Bardem) to the fact that someone special and important has died. Abandoning his current lover of his over 600, America Vicuña (Marcela Mar) in the throes of passion, he arrives at the event to learn that his long-time rival, Dr. Urbino has died. He wastes no time to the frutstration and disappointment of Fermina, to announce to her his plan for them now, at last, to be together. Of course, she resists, swears at his insolence, but eventually she overcomes even the obnoxious intrusions of Florentino into her live again. The two, over the strenuous objection of Fermina's children by Juvenal, run off together aboard Florentino's river boat where they rekindle their romantic passion. Not wanting to ever lose her again, Florentino asks the captain to raise the cholera flag on the boat preventing it from having to stop at ports or pick up passengers. True love is reborn.
