Is it appropriate for kids?
Absolutely, it's one of the better films, especially for little kids, of the year. Unlike Ratatouille where the rats are always just out of harms way, the chipmunks face nearly no imminent dangers except getting sucked into the vacuum cleaner from which they escape unharmed and off screen. The point of the story is that kids need to be loved by someone who loves them for who they are and not how much money they can earn. It's pretty simple.
Plot Spoilers:
• After recording some hit singles and becoming a world-wide sensation, the chipmunks are reveling in their success. Dave (Jason Lee) is keeping things even keel for them, but he's not that conscious of the fact that they are thinking of him as their father until Christmas comes and they give him presents that sons would give their dad. He gives them savings bonds. Uncle Ian (David Cross) spoils them with tons of toys and eventually convinces them, through sneaky methods and lies, that Dave is holding them back and doesn't really love them the way he can.
• Uncle Ian's plan works, and he basically gets custody of the chipmunks. He runs them ragged with tours and concerts and interviews, but they think he loves them. They get confused because he gives them so much cool stuff, they equate that with love—which they later learn is not love at all.
• When Dave learns that they chipmunks are going on a world tour, he realizes he has to get them back. So, he goes to their final US concert before the tour is to begin, and finds them exhausted and lip-syncing their concert. When they see Dave, they break out of character and upset the audience who realizes they are not singing live. The chipmunks try to escape, but end up in Uncle Ian's cat carrier. After a confrontation between Ian and Dave ends with him not getting the chipmunks, he sits in his car forlorn. As Ian drives away in his limo, he looks sad, until the chipmunks pop up in his back seat. "Were talking chipmunks, Dave, we can get out of a cat carrier," Simon explains. And, they are back to being one, big happy family.
