Spoiler Points:
• Lyra (Dakota Blue Richards) and her dœmon, Pan (voiced by Freddie Highmore) discover in Mrs. Coulter's waste bin, documents that connect her to the Magisterium's program called the "General Oblation Board", which Lyra connects when she sees the list of kids names to being the Gobblers. It is the Gobblers that are kidnapping the children. But why?
• Pan and Lyra escape Mrs. Coulter's home and end up in the protected custody of the Gyptian King John Faa (Jim Carter) who transports them to a town close to where the children are thought be held captive.
• Here they meet up with Lee Scoresby (Sam Elliot) who suggests that Lyra find a contracted worker to protect her, and that the ice bear, Iorek Byrnison (voiced by Sir Ian McKellen) would be a fine ally for her. After verbally fighting with him, Lyra uses the alethiometer to ascertain the location of his prized armor after which he agrees to fight for her until she has a victory.
• The alethiometer helps Lyra find Billy Costa (Charlie Rowe) in an abandoned cabin severed from his dœmon and looking ill.
• Realizing the need to rescue the children, Lyra presses the group on, but she has to stop mid-way to settle an old score between the ice bear king, Ragnar Sturlusson (voiced by Ian McShane) and Iorek. She tricks the king into thinking she's Iorek's dœmon. She learned from Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman) that the kinds wanted nothing more than to have a dœmon of his own. She promises to become his dœmon if he can defeat Iorek. So, when Iorek arrives to rescue her, instead he must fight Ragnar. The two engage in single combat; and, after an intensive battle, Iorek prevails and is declared the rightful king. He then transports Lyra most of the way to the secret station where the children are being held.
• Lyra gets picked up by security for the station and quickly explains that she somehow got out and lost. They send her in for dinner where she meets up with her best friend, Roger (Ben Walker) whom she's promised to help escape if he or she were ever captured by Gobblers. But, she needs the use the alethiometer to ascertain their escape. Before she gets too far, however, she's captured and put into a device designed to separate children from and kill their dœmons. Before the procedure is permanent, however, Mrs. Coulter has them reverse the procedure. She awakes to find herself alive and fine with Pan intact. After some inquiry into why Mrs. Coulter saved her, she learns that Mrs. Coulter is her mother and Lord Asriel is her father. She fails to believe it, and eventually she manages to blow up the facility. She and the children escape into the cold where they are rescued from the security forces by Iorek and the Gyptian army. While the children are being returned, Lyra and Roger make a pact to continue on to find her uncle and give him the alethiometer.
