Spoiler for the Ending:
• Upon taking the book to Aunt Lucinda (Joan Plowright), she suggests that the only way that Jared (Freddie Highmore) can save the house and protect the family is to take the book to her father and have him destroy it. In an assault on the institution where Lucinda lives, the trolls get a few pages of the book. Mulgararth is furious, but accepts the few pages when he finds one gives insight into how his trolls can break through the protective circle around the Spiderwick mansion.
• Jared contacts Arthur's former pet Griffin using perfect Old Elf, and the Griffin flies them to the secret location of Arthur who's being kept in a state of stasis to prevent his knowledge from leaking into the wrong hands.
• Unfortunately, he believes he can be of no help because if he were to leave the glade, he'd age suddenly and die. He suggests instead they go back and use the guide to get past the onslaught by Mulgarath.
• As the moon rises, the protective circle is lifted and trolls try to attack the house and get in to find the book.
• Richard Grace (Andrew McCarthy) arrives at the house and breaks through the front door. Jared is so happy to see him, but when he cannot answer what he's supposed to tell Jared as per their last conversation, Jared suspect's he's Mulgarath in disguised and stabs him in the stomach causing him to turn back into his evil shape as ogre.
• The trolls eventually break in and a battle ensues with the Grace's launching tomato sauce at the trolls which dissolves them and salt that burns them.
• In the kitchen, they load the oven with tomato sauce and ignite the gas just in time to blow up all of the trolls, but Mulgarath survives. He then chases, in a very frightening and harrowing sequence, Jared up to the top of the roof to get the book. Jared tosses if off the roof, Mulgarath turns into a crow to swoop down and get it, and right into the awaiting mouth of Hogsqueal the hobgoblin who's been hiding in the tree across from the house. Hogsqueal chomps him up, and the book is saved as it the realm as there is no now more fear of Mulgarath's reign.
• The Graces invite Aunt Lucinda back home to live with them, but just as she arrives, her father returns from the glade, protected by the Silf in a time bubble. He sees his daughter again for the first time in 80 years though, to him, it seems only a day. She asks to return with him as he's unable to stay in this time without reverting to his old age and dying on the spot. He agrees. The Silf turn her back into the little girl she was when her father disappeared and the two are spirited back to the glade. All is well at the Spiderwick mansion.
