Spoiler for the Ending of Shutter:
It turns out that Megumi (Megumi Okina), the ghost now haunting Jane (Rachael Taylor) and Ben Shaw (Joshua Jackson), has a past with Ben and his buddies Bruno (David Denman) and Adam (John Hensley). Years ago in Tokyo Seiko was a translator for a client of theirs and she and Ben struck up a friendship which eventually Seiko took to be less one-sided than did Ben. When she wouldn't leave him alone, Bruno and Adam took over and took care of her for good but not before having their way with her. When they all return to Tokyo, she comes back to both protect Jane from them and to exact her revenge by driving them all to suicide. After she gets rid of Adam and then Bruno, Jane and Ben get the creeps and move back to New York. There, Megumi appears again in a the corners of a photo set that guides Jane to the evidence of what happened to Megumi and Ben's involvement. When she discovers the evidence, she confronts Ben, but he tries to convince her that it was all Adam and Bruno's doing. She flees with him very angry. Once she's gone, Ben whips out a Polaroid® camera and starts trying to photograph Megumi to find her. A mishap causes one to be taken of himself, and she appears sitting on his shoulders accounting for this messed up weight at the doctor's office and the pain in his neck. In a powerful attempt to rid himself of her, he hooks up a batter to a photographic lamp and jolts himself full of electricity. The final scene shows him in a hospital, badly scarred, and possibly catatonic, receiving an injection of some kind with the ghostly Megumi still by his side. Apparently, she has gotten her wish to be with him forever and maybe she wasn't just trying to protect Jane from him, maybe she really was trying to rid Ben of Jane to have him all to herself.
