Spoiler Points for Deception:
• Wyatt Bose(Hugh Jackman)—not his real name—presents himself to Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor), a regular joe account auditor by trade, as an attorney for the firm Jonathan is auditing in NYC at the time of their encounter.
• Shortly thereafter, Wyatt wines and dines him a bit drawing Jonathan into a fantasy world he's created to fool him.
•Jonathan has a 'chance' encounter in the subway with a girl he knows only as 'S' (Michelle Williams) who asks him if the train they are about to board is going where she's heading. He confirms it is but is instantly smitten. Of course the 'chances' of them ever meeting up again would appear to be slim and he knows nothing but her first initial and that only because he notes her key chain fob.
Then, as the opportunity presents itself, he swipes Jonathan's cell phone leaving his own in its place. He knows Jonathan all too well. Wyatt leaves NYC for London presenting no convenient way to orchestrate a cell phone swap when Jonathan discovers the 'mix-up'. But, it turns out that the cell phone comes with hidden benefits, notably a coded list of cell phone numbers that Jonathan quickly learns are from a sex 'list' of Wyatt's that allow for people to contact each other anonymously, hook up in luxury hotel suites, have enjoyable but meaningless intercourse if not commensurate discourse, and then file away the number for another chance tryst. He tests out 'the list' several times hooking up with a Wall Street Analyst (Natash Henstridge), the Belle of Wall Street (Charlotte Rampling), and then by some 'crazy coincidence' S herself. Only he doesn't want S to be a coincidence, he really loves her. They build an exciting and dynamic 'relationship' expeditiously until the other shoe drops. In a bad part of town, under the guise of who knows what, Jonathan in undergarments goes to get ice from the cheap motel machine and comes back to find S gone. Before he can get too much into it, he's knocked unconscious. He awakens to a head trauma, and seeks out a police Detective Russo (Lisa Gay Hamilton) to get to the bottom of the disappearance S. The detective finds his whole case suspicious.
• He then spends the next few days trying to get to the bottom of what's going on, and before he gets too far, he gets a call from Wyatt indicating that it's now very important for him to follow the rules, and the rules are that he going to move money from the accounts of the firm he's auditing into a special account at a bank in Madrid. If he fails to comply, he'll find S dead and a whole lot more.
• But, it's not like Jonathan to back down, rather he puts on his criminology nose and attempts to sniff out the truth. He discovers that everything he thought was reality about Wyatt wasn't. He's not a lawyer, at least not at the firm where they met, he doesn't live in the apt. he was shown, and so one. He uses "the list" to his advantage and hooks up with Tina (Maggie Q) who lets him in on a little reality of Wyatt. Turns out his history is more storied than Jonathan could have realized and, in fact, Wyatt's real name is probably Jamie, but that might not even be true.
• Wanting to believe that his affection for S is both real and mutual, he complies with Wyatt's requests and on the prescribed day he coalesces hidden slush accounts and transfers in excess of $20,000,000 to an account in his name in Spain. But, upon further inspection of the photo that Wyatt sent to his cell phone of S bound and gagged, he notices that the watermark stain that's been developing for some time in there is absent in the photo he's been sent.
• S and Wyatt are seen at a hotel in Spain ready to go withdraw the money. When Wyatt shows up in the office to withdraw the money posing as Jonathan McQuarry (quite a trick since he's killed Jonathan the evening before via a natural gas explosion).
• The bank officer is prepared to release the $20 million from the account when he notices there's been a dual holding requirement placed on the account. Turns out Wyatt Bose must sign too. Immediately, Wyatt knows that Jonathan is some how involved in the hold up of funds. So, he leaves the bank trying to figure out what's happening and runs smack-dab into the awaiting clutches of Jonathan who is now posing as Wyatt Bose. He indicates he wants half the money and S back. At this point, Wyatt is happy to get anything out of the deal and his meticulous planning, so he agrees. The two return to the bank, get the money in two briefcases full of cash, and exit.
• Jonathan says he's willing to give up half his share for the whereabout of S. Wyatt tells him that S really did love him, but that it's too late. They discuss the situation in a local park. Just as Wyatt is about to shoot Jonathan and keep all the money, S shoot him dead and flees. Jonathan leaves behind the money and goes after her.
• So distraught, she tells him she's got to go, and she takes a cab off in to the distance clutching the wind-up walking duck he gave her as if never to be heard from again.
• It's not clear what, if anything, ever happens to the money.
• Jonathan returns to his life, but he's different now. Out of the blue he runs into S again in NYC, they smile, and the rest is up to your imagination.
