Spoiler Points for Nim's Island
• Nim's mother is lost at sea when she's a baby.
• Nim's father raises her on an idyllic island in the south Pacific off the radar.
• Nim (Abigail Breslin) befriends many of the island's inhabitants.
• Nim and her father Jack Rusoe (Gerard Butler) read Alex Rover Adventure novels for fun and excitement.
• Nim's father goes off on an expedition to find a new species of plankton he hopes to name after Nim. He leaves her home on the island at her demand so she can rescue baby turtles from becoming Purina® Crab Chow.
• A freak storm nearly destroys Nim's father's boat and strands him at sea.
• The real Alex Rover (Jodie Foster) aka Alexandra Rover, an agoraphobic author from San Francisco, contacts Jack Rusoe to get inspiration about life near a volcano so she can finish writing her latest Alex Rover novel. Instead of hearing back from Jack, she hears from Nim and eventually figures out that Nim is all alone on the island.
• A cruis ship of Australian tourists approaches, and Nim sets up traps and tricks to defend her island from invaders.
• Nim's pelican, Galileo, locates Nim's father somehow out in the thousands of square miles of sea and starts bringing him supplies like his tool belt. It never occurs to him to send a note back to Nim indicating his location for rescue.
• Nim successfully defends the island and scares off the tourists just as Alexandra Rover arrives. When she arrives, Nim is disappointed to find out she's a woman and treats her with disdain.
• Just when all hope of Nim's father returning is lost, he shows up on the beach having been guided back by Galileo. Nim is so happy; and, of course, Jack and Alexandra predictably pair up.
