Spoiler Points for Iron Man (2008):
• Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) develops a supreme MoMD (Missile of Mass Destruction) called the Jericho Missile. Upon launch, it systematically deploys and released hundreds of geo-targeted sub-missiles that spread and penetrate a giant surface area resulting in a simultaneous cascade explosion of a massive but controlled area obliterating entire mountain sides and all of the caves within.
• Minutes after his successful demonstration in rural, uninhabited Afghanistan for military buyers, his motorcade is ambushed and he is captured by a nomadic, unaffiliated, militant group headed by an evil, power mad man named Raza (Faran Tahir).
• He awakens to find a car battery-powered electromagnet attached to his chest to keep the shrapnel from penetrating his heart and killing him as installed by Yinsen (Shaun Toub) in the middle of Raza's cave hideout. His instructions he learns from Yinsen's translation of Raza are to build Raza a Jericho missile of his own so that he may rule Asia like Genghis Khan.
• Realizing he was not going to make it out of there alive, Tony quickly, with the help of Yinsen, invents a new self-contained, small scale, arc generator powered buy a palladium alloy that glows a brilliant white and replaces the car battery powering the electromagnet in his heart. He then begins to work on an iron plated mechanical, flying suit powered by the same arc generator that will allow him to get out of the cave with his life. He and Yinsen conceive an escape plan for both men as Yinsen has helped Tony to see that his life's work and father's corporate legacy weapons manufacturing company has brought far more terror to the world than he was previously able to comprehend.
• Unfortunately, more time was needed to upload the software into the suit, and Yinsen had to sacrifice his life for Tony's escape. Somehow, he sensed a change in Tony that he knew would yield the far greater good to the world should he be able to get free.
• During the escape, Tony manages to do just enough damage to Raza's outpost to make him really mad and land himself in a sand dune miles away.
• Fortunately, the explosions and Tony's trajectory are picked up by the military who has been searching for him since his kidnapping. His best pal, Jim Rhodes (Terrence Howard) swoops in to rescue him via helicopter.
• Once back in his home of Malibu, CA, Tony announces in an impromptu press conference that he plans to change Stark Industries and its focus toward one that will improve rather than further put at risk the lives of earth's inhabitants. This change of heart is seen as a major threat to the company's vitality and livelihood by co-founder Obadia Stane (Jeff Bridges) who has served as Tony's guardian and mentor as well as the chief executive officer of the company since the untimely death of Tony's parents. So, he shuts Tony down and eventually files paperwork to show him as suffering from a post traumatic distress making him incapable of running his own company and putting himself in charge.
• Tony, nonetheless, presses on in perfecting his iron suit and creating the ultimate exoskeleton superhero suit that comes to be known as Iron Man. With impenetrable skin advanced robotic super strength, repulsor beams, tiny missiles, super computer avionics, and flight anyone wearing the suit would be, in effect a superhero.
• Tony uses the suit to begin to do damage to Raza's minions when he learns that Raza has used his Jericho Missile system sold to him by Stark Industries now controlled by Stane to destroy the home village of Yinsen. Upon returning, however, the U.S. military is convinced he's some sort of rogue unmanned missile system and tries, unsuccessfully, to shoot him down.
• Tony keeps advancing his Iron Man suit, and eventually, sadly, we learn that Obadiah isn't just trying to protect Stark Industries, he actually arranged for Tony to be kidnapped and killed in Afghanistan in the first place and is none to happy that Raza failed in his mission. Using Tony's plans for his suit recovered in the cave by Raza Obadiah plans to build his own version and put an end to both Tony and any doubts that Stark Industries will help rule the world.
• He knock Tony unconscious using a sonic paralyzer and steals his heart's arc generator power source to power his own suit.
• But, before Tony can die, Jim helps him back into life by installing his first generation, weaker arc generator in him and then helping him get into his Iron Man suit.
• Eventually, Tony as Iron Man and Obadiah as Iron Monger battle it out on the streets of Los Angeles in spectacular fashion. Iron Monger, however, won't go down until he's literally tossed into the middle of Stark Industries's own giant arc generator that disintegrates Iron Monger into tiny particles spreading over a huge radius in the sky.

After the Credits:

• Tony Stark returns home and finds that someone named Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is in his living room. He tells Stark that they need to talk as he needs to know all about Avenger Initiative which he says is part of S.H.I.E.L.D.

• S.H.I.E.L.D. is the acronym for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Engagement and Logistics Division which is an evolved government agency. (click here for more details and the history of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury, and how it relates to Iron Man and a likely sequel to this awesome film).
