I waited to see Underworld on DVD, and I regretted it because it was a much better movie than I expected. So, I was very excited to find there would be a sequel, and I was equally excited to go see the new film, Underworld: Evolution, when it opened. Based on the crowd at the theater today buying up all the tickets, I guess a lot of people more than just I were expecting this to be a very good movie. For those new to the Underworld mythology, the storyline surrounds a centuries’ old blood battle between clans of vampires and werewolves (called Lycans). These two immortal enemies continue to work on sophisticated ways to kill each other off in the shadows of our every day existence. Meanwhile, their bites on humans continue to bring more and more children to the fold. Along the way, one human, Michael Corvin, played in both films by the former lust of Felicity’s life, Scott Speedman, discovers that he is the genetic key between lycans and vampires as a hybrid. Guiding him through his transformation from mere emergency room physician to Goliath with super strength, rejuvenation powers, and a taste for blood is a vampire named Selene played by Kate Beckinsale in an ultra-form-fitting, black vinyl, superhero-like outfit. As it happens, in Underworld: Evolution, both Selene and Michael are, for the most part, sort of darker versions of superheroes. The new film brings a lot more of the historical mythology to light, though deciphering some of it can be a bit challenging. The basic premise is that they must fight the founders of both bloodlines as well as the father of both the vampire and lycan lines. This film was very dark, occasionally difficult to follow, and mildly fun in certain spots. At one point they must go from one person to the next with each filling in more of the mystery and them saying, “I cannot help you, but I know who can.” This was a source of some amusement in the audience I joined, but it was a bit hard for me to swallow.

I really enjoyed Mr. Speedman and Ms Bekinsale. They were fun to watch, especially Mr. Speedman as he grew into his new character. I liked some of the mythology of the story. The special effects throughout were quite good. The movie, however, in general was not that great. It struggles trying not to take itself too seriously, and ends up not taking itself seriously enough. I do hope they will make a third movie, and in this one, I would really like to see Michael Corvin taken on both the vampires and the lycans and show them who is boss. A movie more focused on him and his development and the two fighting to save both humanity from the vampires and lycans and the vampires and lycans from hunting each other into oblivion would be a very fun film to watch. Until then, save this one for the DVD player.
