Ask my mom, she’ll verify that I loved Curious George as a kid. And, I did. I remember it so vividly. In fact, I used to call my college roommate (whose name was George) Curious George—he hated that. Who could blame him? He probably heard it his entire life, and he wasn’t really that curious. Anyway, so, I was a little nervous about seeing this film. What if it didn’t live up to expectations?

I had read somewhere that Will Ferrell was doing the voice of a character in the film and after his mind-numbing performance in The Producers and his very confusing performance in Bewitched, and yes, sorry, I didn’t like him in Wedding Crashers either though I loved the rest of the movie, I was very afraid that he might just ruin which ever, hopefully, small character he voiced in Curious George. Well the bad news is that he voiced the main human character and best friend of Curious George, Ted, but the good news is that if you don’t think about Will Ferrell, then you might not even realize it is Will Ferrell. In other words, he was just fine—good even. Some other good news? Despite not being all computer-techno-animated like Hoodwinked or the Pixar® movies, Curious George is delightful. Kids should love it. It is warm, funny, and charming. Most of the morals taught are very good, even for grown ups—though, I wasn’t too sure if kids might think finger painting on the wall was just fine after seeing Curious George do it a lot in the movie).

Also, parents and guardians should know there is a very sad scene where George gets sent away that might disturb some little kids—all ends well, not to worry. The movie is faithful to the spirit of curiosity that was Curious George, but it is also about getting a bit out of your comfort zone and having some fun—we could all use to fall this advice more. The music, often a huge part in animated films these days, is not as catchy as one finds in a Disney® movie, but still quite good with original songs by Jack Johnson. So far, this is one of the best non-independent film releases of the month!
