All right, all right, I admit it, these Final Destination movies are sort of a guilty pleasure for me when it comes to the horror genre of films. I have seen all three, though I saw 2 on DVD. Clearly, 1 is still the best. Probably 2 is better than 3 in some ways that 3 is better than 2 making me wish they had merged 2 and 3 for a really good movie. What do I like about these films? Well, they actually are pretty scary and very gruesome—something I don’t care for. I also like the mystery the main character has to solve in order to stay alive and beat death/Death. In the case of this James Wong-directed sequel, we have a group of high school seniors out at an evening at an amusement park for their class. Wendy Christensen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead—most recently featured in Sky High) sees the impending doom and gloom of the rollercoaster she and her classmates are about to ride and gets most of them off before it crashes—as is the main premise of the other two FD films. The twist here is that Wendy has taken some intriguing photos for the school yearbook of her classmates before the ride that end up playing a crucial role in helping her solve the mystery and attempt to prevent her own death. I found the acting, directing, and special effects (though some were gruesome) all quite satisfying. I especially enjoyed the now sort of more grown up Ryan Merriman whom you might remember from the made-for-tv movies (The Luck of the Irish and Smarthouse) as Kevin Fischer who serves as Wendy’s partner in crime, so to speak. I had a good time trying to figure out what the clues meant, and making predictions as to how this film would differ, if at all, from the previous two films. The death horror scenes were definitely as gruesome as ever—maybe more so, than in previous FD films. So, as guilty pleasures go, I enjoyed FD3. The ending, was, however, not so good and definitely needed more clarification and finality to it. This really held the movie back in the W.I.P. scale as did the overall plot line which wasn’t fresh enough to command a higher score.
