I’ll start by saying this is one of the smartest, most well-written comedies of the year. It was, to use the British expression, brilliant. Most of the credit should go to Ol Parker who both wrote and directed this film with the rest to the charming cast including stars Lena Headey (The Cave and The Brothers Grimm) and Piper Perabo (The Cave and Cheaper by the Dozen 2) and relative newcomer Matthew Goode (Woody Allen’s Match Point). In today’s world, it is pretty easy to forget what a really smartly written script sounds like—and, while it is true that I am smitten by British English accents, I promise that had nothing to do with my heady feelings toward this film. The film is, at heart, a love story where, as the poster hints, two women, Luce (Headey) and Rachel (Perabo) become entangled in a ‘love @ first sight’ affair. The complication? They meet at Luce’s wedding where she marries her long time best friend Heck (Goode). At the time, of course, Luce does not know that she has fallen in love, no, that doesn’t sink in until much later. There are so many nice touches in the casting and portrayals in this film from the darling youngster Boo Jackson, in her feature film debut, who plays ‘H’ and represents the purity and imagination of true love to Darren Boyd as Heck’s best man who stands for the smug desire to stay single and unattached and do little else than ‘shag’ the brides maids. Meanwhile, Luce’s and Rachel’s parents also play significantly into the comedy that ensues. I urge you to listen carefully to each line as there is a wealth of interconnection and subtext woven into the dialog from which you might mine much buried treasure as the story unfolds. My only point of real criticism for the film would be that Matthew Goode plays nearly the same character and person as he did in Match Point. The poor chap seems to be woefully unable to keep his wives’ attention. Setting that aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and I endorse it mightily. It is great fun for the sophisticated filmgoer. I also love the idea of seeing the Tower Bridge out the office window—how could anyone ever tire of that view?
