On the Outs is 86 minutes of pure, depressing, pain for any person with an ounce of empathy, a social conscience, and a belief that there is good in every person. It is nearly excruciating to watch from the moment it commences. Fitting into the semi-new genre of what I call ‘fictional documentaries’—fictional films that play like documentaries—this movie, under the direction of Lori Silverbush and Michael Skolnik, catapults us through a few weeks in the ‘on the outs’ lives of three very different young women whose pedestrian activities unwittingly intersect. Anny Mariano, Judy Marte, and Paola Mendoza play the lead women: Suzette, Oz, and Marisol respectively. Each has her own major crisis which confronts her in a huge way—not IMAX, but close. Unfortunately, within the confines of the script, the women show very, very little growth and nearly no remorse for. For me, this made the film unsatisfying. I did appreciate the message that the filmmakers were trying to convey. Yet, given that there is so much growth needed, 86 minutes was hardly sufficient time. I took a gamble on seeing this film, to be sure, and, sadly, it came up short.
