I'd like to start this review with some props to the Colby Cinema and Arcade staff. This relatively small, two-screen theatre in Colby, Kansas saved me as I was en-route to Texas and needed a movie stop to keep my streak of seeing a movie every day alive. The staff at the theatre was so congenial and welcoming. I really appreciated their small town hospitality.
As for the film, well, I feel like I'm beginning to sound a little like a broken record on sequels and remakes just like every other movie critic, yet I have to ask, was it necessary to remake The Pink Panther with Steve Martin playing the mercurial Inspector Jacques Clouseau? If so, why?
If it was necessary to bring this story to a new generation of movie goers allow them two pieces of advice: (1) don't allow your reaction to this 2006 version to bias your opinion as to how good the original was, and (2) understand that this version falls into the category of N.A.G.A.T.O. (If that acronym bears and resemblance to any word in a language other than English, please forgive me it is unintentional.) I have intended it to stand for "Not As Good As The Original". I saw the original film as a kid, and I loved it. It was so cool, mysterious, exciting, and fun. This version was not cool, not mysterious, unexciting (so much as to put one member of the audience sitting relatively nearby me soundly and comfortably asleep), and only mildly amusing relying almost exclusively on extreme slapstick comedy. Steve Martin does his best given the material...but wait, wasn't he the coauthor of the screenplay? Yes, he was. So, then I take that back. Director Shawn Levy, whose previous directing credits include (according to IMDB): Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) and Just Married (2003), did a great job with cinematography and a very mixed job on controlling the flow of action, script, and purpose of the film. In thinking long and hard about this, I apologize, alas I must report that I really wish they had just re-released the original.
Again, I avail myself to Hollywood if they really are running this low on ideas as to continue to need to remake older movies, then I’m here, ready with a full load of new ones ready to give at least half of them away for free in the name of new material for movie buffs like myself everywhere!
