In 1960, the definitive Rat Pack film was released. It was called Ocean Eleven, and it starred Frank Sinatra as Danny Ocean, with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Angie Dickinson, Richard Conte, and Cesar Romero about 11 guys, all friends from their days in the service, decide to rob 5 Las Vegas casinos in one night. In 2001, Danny Ocean was brought to life again, this time played by George Clooney, and this time with the mission of robbing one of the biggest casinos in Vegas in an updated remake by Steven Soderbergh. The commercial success of this big budget project with an all-star cast allows for the big name actors like Clooney, Pitt, Damon, and director Soderbergh then to do so many of the smaller, indie films they love. It's a decent trade off.
