Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) [PG-13] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.00
Review-lite: Had this been the story for the Curse of the Black Pearl, PoC would have suffered the same sad box office fate as Disney's other ride-turned-film mishap The Haunted Mansion. Unfortunately, in this third film be it chapter 3 or part two of chapter two, loses focus on what really made the other two so spectacular: Johnny Depp's Captain Jack and his rollicking, hilarious misadventures. Gone is the adventure, gone is the hilarity, in place we have a predictable climax, under-utilized stars, and a relatively boring, 168-minute film that may leave you eager to volunteer to walk the plank to escape. Movie Review of Superbad (2007) [R] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $8.25
Review-lite: Sorry, but there's no McLove here for Superbad, the first film of the decade to be appropriately, self-referentially entitled. Michael Cera and Jonah Hill have promising acting careers in future niche roles, something both of whom have already proven, but as for the rest of this mess of a film which rambles into unnecessary waters stretching the thinnest possible idea out to nearly two hours, it's not supergood. Sure, there are some funny parts. Watch the trailer to see most of them. Aside from that, it's a disjointed film without much message and nor meaning, and to call it anything else is to endow it with properties is simply doesn't have. The Nanny Diaries (2007) [PG-13] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.00
Review-lite: Based on the New York Times #1 best seller by former Upper East Side Manhattan nannies, much has been changed for the film version of The Nanny Diaries. Nan has become Annie (Scarlett Johansson), a New Jersey girl, and recent college graduate who majored in anthropology suddenly thrust into the world of nanny-dom when she rescues Grayer X from certain death in Central Park. Mrs. X (Laura Linney) immediately lures here into becoming Grayer's nanny, and her life is unexpectedly turned for the better and worse. Co-directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini did some artistically interesting things with the film. The camera work is always interesting, and the museum dioramas that capture the slices of life in the film were clever. In the end, The Nanny Diaries is a clever and funny film ultimately leading to overdue female empowerment after many wrong turns. (click for full details and complete review)

Arctic Tale (2007) [G] 96 minutes -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.25
Review-lite: Queen Latifah expertly and warmly narrates this National Geographic follow-up to March of the Penguins, this time focusing on life in the Arctic to be know as Arctic Tale. The tale in question is about a baby walrus named Sela and a baby polar bear named Nanu who grow up in an uncertain world of gravely changing climates decreasing their habitats and making their lives far more of a struggle than living year-round in sub-zero temperatures is all on its own. Facing both the grim reality of such lives, the filmmakers took time to add narration that adds both humor and humility to the powerful story. Parents and guardians with young children should be prepared for some grim elements. (click for full details and complete review)
