Hamlet 2 (2008) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.50
Review-lite: Holy moly! Properly reviewing Hamlet 2 proves nearly impossible. Is it an outrageous farce with a deep and ironic message or is it trying to be a dramatic portrait of the human condition of an artist that's funny due to its irony? Maybe it's both, maybe it's neither. Possibly only co-writers Pam Brady and Andrew Fleming know for sure. One thing not so perplexing is that the delightful inhabiting of bad actor turned bad drama teacher, Dana Marschz, by Steve Coogan has finally given this incredible and zany British actor a role that fully taps his many talents. Hamlet 2 surely is quite funny, and it's tragic and sad as well in spots. It's best when the play within the screenplay finally gets to the stage; yet, unfortunately, we get to see far too little of that. (click for full details and complete review)

The House Bunny (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.50
Review-lite: Decidedly vapid, Fred Wolf's The House Bunny starring Anna Faris as a former Playboy Bunny turned house mother when Hugh kicks her out of the mansion due to her advanced age of 27, despite a breakout cast of young women rivaling the rising star vehicle potential that The Outsiders held for it male cast back in the 80s, fails to score on many levels. A mixed moral message that beauty in women is only skin deep fails when the glamorous new house mother turns her sorority of misfits into the glamour calendar girls of campus and then and only then do they start to attract the opposite gender. The cast is great, and the script has come high points, but mostly this derivative film is recycled from too many recent films and is less cutting edge than an average episode of ABC Family's hit "Greek". Review-lite: At least ten times better than Indian Jones 4, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor takes The Mummy to franchise status and more than lives up to expectations despite Maria Bello's awful English accent and some cheesy dialog. Awesome special effects, a likeable cast: especially legends Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, and a great historical setting, China, help make this film rise above the competition. The Dark Knight (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.50
Review-lite: Batman Begins covered the back story affording the brothers Nolan, Chris and Jonathan, more time in The Dark Knight to focus on the the superhero archetype and the conflict between having a real life and living a lonely life of service. "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain," says up-and-coming hero D.A. Harvey Dent. This simple line veils the complexity of the notion much as does the superhero's mask hide the true person within. This required the appearance of a supervillain and his orchestration of the fall of the best heroes. Toward that end, the brothers bring forth The Joker. Every single performance is outstanding. The pace, the special effects, the haunting score, the deftly-constructed story, are perfect. Horton Hears A Who! (2008) [G]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.75
Review-lite: A political powder keg, the Jimmy Hayward / Steve Martino adaptation of Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who can be seen as incredibly compelling given the geopolitical landscape of today. When it comes to being a great series of moral lessons for kids, it scores high—though it should be noted that the film is somewhat scary and load with scenes of Horton and Whoville in danger. It might be too scary for children under 5 years old—parents and guardians might want to see it alone first. Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.75
Review-lite: While darker and less poignant than the first Chronicles film, Prince Caspian possesses all of the grand special effects and wonder of the first. William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Skandar Keynes, and Georgis Henley are back as Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy called back to Narnia to help the rightful heir to the throne, Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) ascend to his throne in a Narnia now ruled by invaders called the Telmarines, descendants of Pirates whose ship wreck on an island opened a portal into Narnia through which they invaded. Not quite as good as the first film due to the lack of a sense of epic adventure in a whole new world, nonetheless, the likeable young cast once again treats us to a very good film with some disappointing news, however, for fans of William Moseley and Anna Popplewell. Step Brothers (2008) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $7.75
Review-lite: Actually, there was every reason to feel great about Step Brothers: reunion of Talladega Nights principle cast and director, Will Ferrell just came off the financially unsuccessful and critically panned fiasco (Semi-Pro), preview was pretty darn funny, producer = Judd Apatow, what more could you ask? How about that not every funny part be in the preview? How about that the plot have a point? How about that Will Ferrell has now been type cast as the hopeless misfit who's so lame he still gets beaten up at age 45 by schoolyard bullies? How about that John C. Reilly once had a promising acting career but continues to steer in front of train wrecks like this? Well, on the bright side, Step Brothers is better than the aforementioned Semi-Pro. Hey, no offense, but it's even better than Superbad, sort of despite the plot similarities. But, other than that, it's beginning to seem more and more like Judd Apatow has lost his touch. The X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.25
Review-lite: Unfortunately, die-hard "The X-Files" fans, the film might better have been called "X-Files: I'm in Utter Disbelief about How Bad this Movie Is". Mulder and Sculley reunite to find a kidnapped FBI agent the bureau feels will die if not found in a few days. Their only lead is a former Priest charged with many counts of child abuse from back in the day, who claims he's getting visions from God to direct him to victims of heinous crimes. If anyone can figure out what Chris Carter was thinking with this plot, let them post away here. The film is flat out terrible. (click for full details and complete review)

Review-lite: If you're searching for Santa Clause 4, Fred Claus is not it, far from it. Rather, director David Dobkin's take on the curmudgeonly life of Santa's older brother, Fred (Vince Vaughn) plummets into the macabre with grandiose actors playing somewhat more humble characters in a story that seems like it's working way to hard to be funny with mostly non-funny moral lessons and actors more suited to portraying the world's most villainous crime gang. Meet Dave (2008) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.25
Review-lite: With this engaging cast including Eddie Murphy (who's back in the game), Gabrielle Union, Elizabeth Banks, Scott Caan, and Pat Kilbane; great effects, an awesomely creative story, and some important life lessons, Brian Robbins's Meet Dave blasted away all expectations. While it's true the film might have fit better into the late 80s early 90s, for those of us still nostalgic about a time when comedic movies meant something more than just how many times a moron can swear in a single sentence, how many illegal situations a couple of idiotic, pre-pubescent teenagers can get into in 30 minutes, or who can create the grossest gross out scene ever concocted and then put on film sometimes even writing the entire script so that it can lead up to this monstrosity of unnecessary curiosity, it's time to Meet Dave. Review-lite: Give Space Chimps a chance. Co-writer / director Kirk De Micco utilizes a good 1960s-ish story and style in this CGI-animated film about chimps sent into space as guinea pigs before human crews to discover what happened to a missing space probe. Adventure for the chimps on a new planet ensues. Maybe less humorous than other animated comedies, the stories many morality plays more than make up for it. Review-lite: Russian director Timur Bekmambetov ignites the Hollywood screen with this adaptation of the Wanted comic book series into an action-charged, Fight Club for the 2000s. The brilliant cast including James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, and Morgan Freeman dazzle from open to twist of fate closing moments. It's Hitman, Die Hard 4, DaVinci Code, and the Bourne series all rolled into one, but with more comedy and more Matrix.
