Review-lite: Batman Begins covered the back story affording the brothers Nolan, Chris and Jonathan, more time in The Dark Knight to focus on the the superhero archetype and the conflict between having a real life and living a lonely life of service. "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain," says up-and-coming hero D.A. Harvey Dent. This simple line veils the complexity of the notion much as does the superhero's mask hide the true person within. This required the appearance of a supervillain and his orchestration of the fall of the best heroes. Toward that end, the brothers bring forth The Joker. Every single performance is outstanding. The pace, the special effects, the haunting score, the deftly-constructed story, are perfect. Dark Knight batwings atop the list of best films 2008—representing one that real people, not just erudite film critics, can agree is amazing. (click for full details and complete review)

Horton Hears A Who! (2008) [G]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.75
Review-lite: A political powder keg, the Jimmy Hayward / Steve Martino adaptation of Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who can be seen as incredibly compelling given the geopolitical landscape of today. When it comes to being a great series of moral lessons for kids, it scores high—though it should be noted that the film is somewhat scary and load with scenes of Horton and Whoville in danger. It might be too scary for children under 5 years old—parents and guardians might want to see it alone first. Brilliant animation and a great story help make for a dynamic and fun film that works well on many levels. (click for full details and complete review)

Review-lite: At least ten times better than Indian Jones 4, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor takes The Mummy to franchise status and more than lives up to expectations despite Maria Bello's awful English accent and some cheesy dialog. Awesome special effects, a likeable cast: especially legends Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, and a great historical setting, China, help make this film rise above the competition.
