Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.50
Review-lite: If you're anxious to see a brilliant performance by Luke Goss as one of the best and most courageous and heroic villains of all time, see Hellboy II: The Golden Army written and directed by Pan's Labyrinth Academy Award®-winner Guillermo del Toro. If not, then run, don't walk, to the video store and get a copy of Pan's Labryinth—a brilliant and breath-taking del Toro film that won't leave you scratching your head or wanting your money back at the end. Certainly, Mr. del Toro has populated Hellboy II with brilliant creatures—his signature—but the boring superheroes and story of mixed messages were not worth the price of admission. Kung Fu Panda (2008) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.00
Review-lite: Dreamworks Animation, famous for the Shrek films, has far outdone itself and its history with this spectacular and breathtakingly beautiful story of a chubby panda names Po who loves to eat more than he likes to cook noodles in his father's noodle shop and dreams of becoming a kung fu hero. He gets the chance of a lifetime, somewhat accidentally, were it not for the fact that "there are no accidents" when he falls as the foot of the Kung Fu master who proclaims him the fabled Dragon Warrior and savior of his peaceful valley from the the evil reign of Tai Lung. Young and old will find this film readily appealing and learn a great deal from the subtle morals of this wonderful journey of self-discovery and enlightenment. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $10.25
Review-lite: Directed by Dave Filoni of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" fame, this inbetween chapter of the Star Wars Saga (sort of a II.5) is technically well done looking remarkably like the Lego® PS2 game more than the films. The first 60 minutes or so are nearly coma-inducing, and the story only picks up finally when Senator Padmé Amidala decides to pay Ziro the Hutt a visit to form a treaty with the Hutt clan. She finds herself no match for Jabba's uncle, and only C-3PO can come to the rescue. The money spent on this film should better have been directed toward the accomplishment of the long-promised episodes 7, 8, and 9 of the Star Wars Sage instead. There was practically no point in making this film. If there is a point in paying to see it, it's a small one and certainly not worth the average prices of a dinnertime movie ticket. This Christmas (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.00
Review-lite: It's tempting to refer to Preston A. Whitmore II's This Christmas as a knock off of Tyler Perry's Hollywood confounding films, but that is to give it too much credit. Part of the problem is that no one but Tyler Perry has figured out how to move the stories from the realm of clichés and stereotypes and refocus on the characters. Truth be told, the cast was quite good, yet the story relies too heavily on archetype, sketch, and outlines of people that we never really get to feel or know. There's not much choice, even, but to rely on stereotypes. The film is not overly funny, not that it has to be, and the drama was too obvious. They say there's no such thing as a new story, and this film would prove that. It's a shame because there really was a lot of talent up on the screen. (click for full details and complete review)
