Evan Almighty (2007) [PG] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.50
Review-lite: Were it not for some low-brow bird-dropping and tool mishap scenes, Evan Almighty would be an entirely splendid film. Terrific performances by Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman with a great supporting cast including John Goodman and Lauren Graham, phenomenal special effects including a cast of thousands of animals, all buoyed a story with a truly lovely and significant moral tale. The film is a dose of just what we need right now, as a society, to remind us of our real purpose in life and of the need for us to elect politicians into power that will strive to honor and uphold both our Constitutionally protected rights and values while simultaneously modeling good stewardship for our planet. Captivity (2007) [R] 87 minutes -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.25
Review-lite: The stark, cold reality of a former life lost to tragedy and time phases not Pakastani immigrant Ahmad (Ahmad Razvi) as he determinedly arises each morning at 3:00 a.m. to prepare his coffee / bagel push cart for morning customers alongside many thousands of fellow immigrants. Their tireless efforts each morning prepares one of the world's largest cities for the millions of people who will require it to be ticking like a finely-tuned instrument. Ahmad carries his propane tank to the cart garage, loads his supplies, and pushes the cart to his assigned and tightly controlled location. Meticulously he places each pastry on the shelf, each tea bag in the cup, and the coffee filter in the basket for the grounds. Customers begin to arrive just before the break of dawn, each with a pleasant smile or request for their usual. He greets them and treats them with the same regard he has for his spotless push cart, one he hopes to purchase outright soon to increase his profits in his pursuit of sufficient funds to afford a decent place to live for himself and his recently estranged young son now living with relatives. He refuses to let the humdrum, routine, seemingly mundane existence of operating the pushcart and selling bootleg pornographic DVDs get to him nor deter him from his goal. Scenes reveal the depth of his love and adoration for his son as well as his determination; yet, likewise, other scenes paint a bleak and dreary potential for accomplishing his goal no matter how hard he works. At last, a beautiful young woman from Barcelona named Noemi (Leticia Dolera) appears one afternoon in the newsstand formerly staffed by one of his regular porn disc customers. Reign Over Me (2007) [R] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.50
Review-lite: Reign Over Me is remarkable. Not only do Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle deliver perfect performances with incredible depth, but the story packs an incredibly powerful punch examining the traditionally downplayed topics of mental illness and grief. This is a fascinating, electric, plunge into the damage tragic events can inflict on the human mind and soul. But it is also a film about learning to reclaim one's life, permit others to grieve in their own way, and the incredible value of helping someone in mental distress to restore their life. It truly is a reclamation project. Writer, Director, and actor Mike Binder reached some depths of understanding in his writing that allowed him to beautifully acknowledge and script these characters. Pearl Jam's amazing remake of "Reign Over Me" added the final dimensions to an already mesmerizing experience. This movie truly is 2007's first must-see film. Surf's Up (2007) [PG] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.25
Review-lite: Surfing penguins? No this is not a sequel to Happy Feet—remember that was dancing penguins. Were it not for the plethora of penguin films of late, Surf's Up might have played a bit better and seemed a bit less recycled. Nonetheless, directors Ash Brannon and Chris Buck took a new approach—an animated documentary style film, in an effort to create a unique look at the dreams of young penguin Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf) as he hopes to follow in the webbed footprints of his idol Big Z. James Woods and Jon Heder deliver great vocal performances to some of the most personality-filled CGI animated characters ever created. Whimsical and hilarious, the film is full of great laughs and not so many inside jokes. It has a good life lesson; yet, again, it's a bit derivative even in that regard.
