Spoiler Points:
• Lyla's father, Thomas Novacek (William Sadler) signs her baby over to the state by forging her signature on the documents. [Not sure why such a cute little kid wouldn't have been adopted at birth? And, it might have made a crisper, cleaner film since his family would have been living in Manhattan, they could have discovered he was a prodigy, and that could have been the focus of the film instead of all these other characters.]
• Thomas tells Lyla (Keri Russell) the baby was lost. His reasoning is that the baby will ruin her musical career. He's a relatively unenlightened, domineering, and antiquated person.
• At Thomas's deathbed, he tells Lyla the truth, she has a son out there somewhere.
• She searches all over the NY Adoption legal system centers to find out what ever happened to him. She's also supposed to be performing a concert in Central Park—she's not played in years.
• Back in San Francisco, Louis (Jonathan Ryhs Meyers) has become some rich and fancy businessmen. His brother, Marshall (Alex O'Loughlin) longs to reunite the band. At a party, he plays some footage of the band playing years ago, which causes the two to get into a fist-fight. This embarrasses Louis's female companion, so she leaves in a huff in his car. This experience prompts him to look up Lyla and discover that she's living in Chicago. He goes there only to find she's gone to New York. So, he goes to New York, where he just so happens to run into his son, now called August Rush (Freddie Highmore), playing music by a fountain in Manhattan. The two strike up a duet on each other's guitars, and Louis give him advice about attending the concert for the performance of his rhapsody (though he only half believes the kid). Basically, he tells the kid to go. This just before Wizard (Robin Williams) sees him messing around with a stranger and rushes over to rescue him.
• In the subway, August escapes from Wizard and then rushes to get to Central Park for the concert. His misses seeing his mother play—he doesn't know that Lyla is his mother anyway, so that doesn't matter that much. She finishes and walks off into the crowd. Just at that moment, the chairwoman of the event announces that August Rush will conduct his Rhapsody. August appears in tuxedo and starts. Louis arrives at the park having seen that Lyla would be performing at the concert on the banners on flag poles. He just happens to arrive at the same time as Lyla turns to see August Rush on stage—she recognizes him instantly from the photos given to her by Jeffries (Terrence Howard). The two walk forward through the crowd as if drawn to August by a magical force.
• Louis takes Lyla by the hand. She turns and looks into his eyes. They both look at August. August conducts like a madman. He sees them in the crowd. At last, he has found his parents.
