August Rush (2007) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.50
Review-lite: Somewhere along the way, Kirsten Sheridan's August Rush lost its focus, perhaps taking on too many big personalities in the form of ancillary characters. This drew attention away from what really sets the film apart and that his the story of a young musical prodigy getting to Julliard School and composing some of the most sensational and revolutionary music anyone has ever heard—all really the work of composer Mark Mancina who is the unsung hero of the film. Without the music, even with Freddie Highmore's sensationa;, albeit autistic-savant-like portrayal, the film would not have held half the degree of interest. Bee Movie (2007) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.75
Review-lite: Jerry Seinfeld and company write and voice a morally complicated tale of a bee who finds himself longing for greater adventure than being a honey stirrer for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, while doing what most would consider the right thing—fighting injustice—he inadvertently nearly wipes out all life on earth. This might be way too 'heady' for little kids to wrap their minds around, especially ones whom we are trying to teach right from wrong. In the end, the lustrous animation is nearly wasted on a film where the protagonist has to resort to stealing to right his wrongs. (click for full details and complete review)

Dan In Real Life (2007) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $10.50
Review-lite: Co-writer / director Peter Hedges presents a slice of life in Dan in Real Life. A story of finding true love on the wrong side of your brother, the film was set up as an outrageously funny, romantic comedy starring Steve Carell, Dane Cook, and Juliette Binoche. Well, it does star these three, but it's hardly outrageously funny. There are funny and romantic parts, mixed with interminably long scenes of family activities, but mostly watching the film is like thinking your going to crash a fun wedding that turns out to be a maudlin family reunion. Hitman (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.00
Review-lite: On the one hand, it might be possible to say that Hitman is derivative borrowing the best of the best from its predecessors. On the other, there's the sheepish grin of Timothy Olyphant as his Agent 47 sets in motion, with the simple catalyst of an ancient key, the down fall of so many. So while a tad derivative it might be, Xavier Gens's Hitman, with Geoff Zanelli's stirring musical score, nonetheless, is destined to be acclaimed the best action thrill ride of the year. Decades after the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe vs. Wade case, abortion remains one of America's most troublesome moral and legal quagmires. In director Tony Kaye's ("American History X") ambitious and scalding documentary, the subject is debated by pro-life and pro-choice activists advancing both rational and radical arguments, while the procedure's history--and its graphic reality--is chronicled onscreen. 152 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English; Subtitles: English (SDH); photo gallery; theatrical trailer.

No Country for Old Men (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.50
Review-lite: Joel and Ethan Coen present their adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel No Country for Old Men, and while there are things that don't add up, an ending series of scenes that fail to deliver on the expectations amassed from the villainous Anton Chigurh's first Coen Bros.-worthy murder, plus an actual ending that comes from out of left field and provides zero resolution, there's still much to enjoy in the film. The dynamics of the situations and the characters' outlooks on everything provide grim reflections on a decaying culture and national ethos. Mostly, though Javier Bardem's portrayal of Chigurh will haunt you for days to come and have you looking over your shoulder every time you come in contact with a 25-cent piece. While a very good effort, No Country for Old Men is still no Fargo. (click for full details and complete review)

Sleuth (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.25
Review-lite: Undoubtedly, there will be criticism of Kenneth Branagh and Harold Pinter for messing around with the original Sleuth (1973). Yet, how fun it must have been for them to recreate the film, bringing a great stage play back to the screen, only this time with Michael Caine in Sir Laurence Olivier's role and Jude Law in Michael Caine's role. With surprising twists and complicated roles, the story is truly and actor's dream. Both Law and Caine seem perfectly cast as if the roles were made for them. The story is potent, pungent, and practically irresistible, though the ending is definitely tragic. Certainly a great film and well worth the re-visit. (click for full details and complete review)
