Introducing the Dwights (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.25
Review-lite: Brenda Blethyn brings mother and stand-up comic Jean Dwight to life in this bittersweet Australian film, Introducing the Dwights (aka Clubland). Her oldest son, Tim (Khan Chittenden) having reached adulthood, will threaten to upend her world as he begins to fall in true love for the first time with Jill (Emma Booth) casing his mother to worry she's about to lose her eldest son forever. With humor and humility, the film is populated with wonderful characters and actors who've really worked to bring them to life in a potent way. The shortcomings may arise in the sense that, when the film's over, you wonder what was so special about this? Put those feelings aside and just allow yourself to become absorbed in the real-seeming lives of these characters. You may get the same feeling you get in watching a train wreck, and yet it's impossible to turn away. (click for full details and complete review)

No Reservations (2007) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.75
Review-lite: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart play rival chefs in this wonderfully seasoned summer dramedy about one woman's worl and how a handsome stranger might finally find the right recipe to win over her heart with the help of her recently, tragically-acquired, niece (Abigail Breslin). Not destined to win major awards, nonetheless, No Reservations deserves a spot on this summer's menu devoid of any real romance with the exception of that between a boy and his robot Camaro®. Zeta-Jones and Eckhart have wonderful onscreen chemistry, though Abigail Breslin comes across as too old for her role. The film, nonetheless, will tickle the palette as much as the funny bone. Perfect for those in the 'sentimental' category. (click for full details and complete review)

Becoming Jane (2007) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.00
Review-lite: Be forewarned, Janeites, this film takes great liberties with hints from Jane Austen's letters to her sister, Cassandra, in extrapolating an entire affair between her and Tom Lefroy for which there is very little historical evidence. Nonetheless, the film is quite darling with Anne Hathaway in the lead role opposite the dashing James McAvoy as Lefroy. Director Julian Jarrold admirably marries the fact and fiction together creating a film that, upon accepting that it is truly not the real life of Jane Austen but a 'rebooted' version, is close to being as enjoyable as one of Jane Austen's novels but not quite. Gone Baby Gone (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.00
Review-lite: Ben Affleck writes and directs his first major motion picture, Gone Baby Gone, starring his brother Casey, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, and Michelle Monaghan and adapted from the best-selling novel about an abducted girl and two private detectives who seek to solve the mystery of her disappearance. The very twisty plot layers on morality issues as well making for a decidedly great film knocked down a bit by misinterpretations that its story is somehow ripped from the headlines. Casey Affleck proves himself a capable leading man, despite his uncanny youthful looks. It's only too bad that Morgan Freeman's role demanded so little of the screen legend. Otherwise, it's an engaging thriller with plenty of surprises. (click for full details and complete review)

We Own the Night (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.25
Review-lite: James Gray presents what turns out not to be the successor to The Departed but, rather, an emotional drama about brothers and the choice they make in their lives called, We Own the Night,. Joaquin Phoenix plays the rebel and Mark Wahlberg plays the dutiful son of Police Chief Burt Grusinsky (Robert Duvall) as the trio must deal with the consequences of Russian drug imports infiltrating their fair city. Unfortunately, the lifeless script and archetypal characters possesses little to capture the imagination or induce empathy in the audience. These people are relatively shallow souls who do relatively expected things. Phoenix delivers the most with his character, but even he seems too weary. No one seems to find being in this film any more interesting that most of it is to watch. (click for full details and complete review)

Why Did I Get Married? (2007) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.75
Review-lite: Tasting deliciously like a sour strawberry dipped in chocolate, Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? stands out as his most mature film as well as one of the year's best dramedies. Featuring a very talented cast including himself, Janet Jackson, Sharon Leal, Malik Yoba, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, and Michael Jai White, the story focuses on couples and their relationships as they come to head with the reality of the deep dark secrets of their past. Everyone can learn a thing or two about the responsibilities of maintaining a modern relationship and marriage. (click for full details and complete review)

Martian Child (2007) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.25
Review-lite: Twenty or thirty years ago, Martian Child would have rivaled Ordinary People or Terms of Endearment and have been a shoo in for a Best Picture nomination. Unfortunately, high tech, hormone-intensified fare now drives Hollywood causing a departure from find emotionally deft dramas like this John Cusack plays sci-fi writer turned adoptive single parent of a little kid who thinks he's a Martian story. It's a shame because there need to be more films with fewer complications like this one out there to offset the over-the-top fare that used to be our escape from reality not our reality. Bobby Coleman, who plays the little 'Martian', delivers the best performance by a kid since. (click for full details and complete review)
