Spoiler Points:
• Raya Green (Rutina Wesley) steps her way onto Bishop's JSJ (Jane Street Junta) Crew, but her addition causes the loss of one member.
• The JSJ perform at a competition, following up Raya's rival, Michelle (TrĂ© Armstrong) and her Fem Phatals. What they didn't realize was the Michelle was stealing their choreography. So, the Fems end up walking all over them despite Raya's attempts to jazz up the routine a bit. This action makes Bishop mad, and he kicks her off the team.
• Lester Johnson (Jai Jai Jones) asks Raya to join his crew for the Step Monster competition. She agrees to the new term, but really hates the thought of telling Bishop.
• Raya lies to her mom and dad, who are bickering these days, about where she's going, and then leaves for Detroit. The night before the competition, Bishop asks his younger brother Quake (Brennan Gademans) to join his crew in place of Raya. He agrees but only for 20% of the competition prize money should they win.
• The preliminary rounds are held, and Michelle injures her leg during her performance preventing her group from reaching the final three which include Lester's crew, Bishop's crew, and another crew. They will dance off the next day.
• That night, at a hotel room party, Raya discovers that Lester has given her grandmother's locket to his new girlfriend. She's so furious that, eventually, she quits his crew leaving and begins to head home. Michelle shows up and gives her back her grandmother's locked which she ripped of the neck of Lester's girlfriend. Just before things are all too late, and Raya's never going to earn that money for her tuition, Bishop shows up with some willingness to forgive her and invites her to rejoin his crew.

At the Step Monster finale, Lester's crew performs, and during the second act, Raya is hanging out focusing when her mother shows up angry that she lied about where she was etc. Her mother also worries these people are the same kind who got their other daughter killed. He mother shows her the letter from her independent school that shows she got a 92% on the scholarship tests and is set. She then tries to yank Raya home.

We see JSJ take the stage without Raya. The routine gets going, and then Raya appears behind the wheel of a shiny orange racecar. This is when the routine really gets going and they seal their place in history as the winners. Raya's mother watches her daughter dance with the crew and develops a fine sense of appreciation for quality stepping.
