27 Dresses (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.75
Review-lite: Whether because once one becomes addicted to Judd Apatow approved comedy one just cannot go back or because the plot has been done in one form or another 27 times, 27 Dresses just begs to be hung back up in the closet with it's dusty, bridesmaid dress cousins. It's odd that neither the director nor writer noticed that their film couldn't have been more formulaic had they just actually taken the scripts from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and My Best Friends Wedding put them in a fancy new Food Processor from William Sonoma right off the wedding gift list, puréed on high for 15 minutes, and changed the names of the characters around a bit. Sadly, that's basically how 27 Dresses plays out despite some charming performances by Katherine Heigl as the perennial bridesmaid and James Marsden as her soul mate in disguise. The Golden Compass (2007) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.00
Review-lite: Written and directed by Chris Weitz from award-winning author Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass scores in drawing one in to the mythology of the story set up by the narrator who reveals a world in a parallel universe where the souls of people manifest themselves outside the body in the form of archetypal, talking animals called dœmons; the world is ruled by the Magisterium; and there's a secret connecting element between all living things known as dust. The story begins dramatically with the heroine, Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) saving her uncle, Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) from being poisoned. Without sticking entirely to the plot of the first book, the first film, featuring Nicole Kidman as the wicked Mrs. Coulter, provides excellent effects and non-stop, fantasy-driven, epic adventure that may be too scary for young children. How She Move (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.25
Review-lite: Ian Iqbal Rashid's How She Move shares much in common with the 80s trendsetter, Flashdance. Similarly utilizing a virtual unknown leading lady, Rutina Wesley, playing a smart young daughter of Jamaican immigrants, Raya Green) who must step dance her way back into her independent school education when funds her parents had saved for her tuition get co-opted to help get her older sister off drugs, the film rises above many of the formulaic, "underdog rising to the top due to a hidden talent" films of the genre. With great music, awesome stepping, Canadian financing, a talented young cast, guest judges for the Step Monster as themselves in the form of Keyshia Cole and DeRay Davis, and rousing music and dance step routines including the finale top three dance performances, the film possesses a poetic electricity that helps it rise a bit above run of the mill rivals.
