El Cantante (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.25
Review-lite: Outstanding performances by Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony in El Cantante the story of the incredibly tragic life of Salsa sensation Hector Lavoe are about all one gets out of this somewhat slow paced biopic that's been done a time or two before much better. Celebrities who get caught up in the world of drugs that sink their lives are all but cliché by now, and when there's nothing in the story to help illustrate why Lavoe was the way he was, the illustrative power diminishes even more than the impact of the trite plotlines. Still, Anthony and Lopez are to be given quite a great deal of credit for their performances even if the story and the direction did not bring about a film that might have heightened the eventual significance of the outcome of Lavoe's life and the legacy of his music. First Sunday (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $3.00
Review-lite: Given the Oscar® contenders out from the end of year and great new films on DVD, it's quite possibly the best advice anyone could get this year not to see First Sunday. Already a candidate for worst film of the decade, the Ice Cube / Tracy Morgan vehicle written and directed by David E. Talbert is a shabby dramedy not even in the same league with Tyle Perry's work that details the life of crime of Durell (Ice Cube) and Lee John (Tracy Morgan) as they end up attempting to rob a church to get access to the money each needs to save his life. Awful dialog, terrible story, outdated, stereotypical and just plain 'not funny' should be enough warning to advise against seeing this film…maybe…ever. (click for full details and complete review)

I'm Not There (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.50
Review-lite: There are possibly three better movies inhabiting Todd Haynes's I'm Not There: Jack Rollins's or Robbie Clark's life story, or an entire authentic Bob Dylan biopic starring Cate Blanchett. Dylan disciples may love this film. Film students may admire Todd Haynes for his creative genius to attempt to make something like this. Surely, there are some brilliant elements to the film, and some truly sensational performances from some of the best actors of our time. Still, no matter how artistically relevant the choices, there's a fairly equal portion of the film that's difficult to endure without a more dramatic payout in the form of greater insight into why Dylan was so important or impacting as an icon such that his music endures to this day as does he as a relevant contributor to the world's music scene—those answers are still blowin' in the wind. Little Children (2006) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.75
Review-lite: Will Lyman's narration introduces the characters at once in Todd Field's film based on Tom Perrotta's book Little Children: Sarah Pierce (Kate Winslet) and her mundane existence with daughter, Lucy (age 3) whom she can barely stand; and the 'prom king', Brad Adamson (Patrick Wilson) whose similarly routine life has him playing house-husband with his baby son. Their lives collide at the playground when an electrifying kiss unlocks their repressed inner passions. The story scrutinizes the roots of temptation and the lack of will most have to resist it. A subtle, elegant beauty to the film reveals so much more than that which the narrator and actors give up. Time stands still as Tom Newman's score and the silence permitted by Field's direction along with brilliant performances, strong narration, and a taut script reveling in the carnal struggle against temptation artistically coalesce in one of the best films of 2006. Over Her Dead Body (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.00
Review-lite: John Tucker Must Die writer, Jeff Lowell, takes his turn at writing and directing this romantic comedy without the spark of romance. While his characters and dialogue are up to par, the story gets mired in needless complications and distractions that take the gimmicky plot in the wrong direction a few times too many. The result is a predictable if somewhat derivative comedy that modestly entertains, but never fulfills expectations. (click for full details and complete review)

P.S., I Love You (2007) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.75
Review-lite: P.S. I Love You probes the ranges of emotions from start to finish of a couple: Holly and Gerry Kennedy (Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler) torn apart by the death of one, and how the living partner has to grow to become accustomed to the life event and learn to life on after. With humor and humility, the story tenderly permits Holly to grow beyond not only her loss but into a realm of self-discovery to finally find her true passion when it comes to her life's work. Both wonderfully engaging and spirited, the film respects the intelligence of the audience and steers clear of the trite or mundane making it one of the warmest and satisfying 'lighter' holiday films. Teeth (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.50
Review-lite: First time feature director, Mitchell Lichtenstein delivers a biting dark comedy that literally has as much bark as bite. A teenage girl discovers when her "chastity promised" boyfriend tries to take advantage of her that she has a little something special under the hood capable of extracting the ultimate price for his trespass. His horrified expression will sear into the retina of every red-blooded male on the planet as a reminder to the potential trauma associated with committing an unwelcome advance on another person. Leading actress Jess Weixler carries the film as she takes on her character's distinction and discovers the true colors of most of the men in her life. The film is off-balance in its approach to gender, that could have been remedied by the presence of just one good guy making it a more complete and praise-worthy film.
