Spoiler Points:
• Professor Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey) selects Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) to fill the open spot as a "Big Player" for his card counting team because he senses the kid won't succumb to his emotions when playing the system. Unfortunately, at the height of his success, eventually he does what every human being might do, and he loses big one evening. Rosa'a anger is unlike anything the team has ever witnessed. Rosa abandons them stating that Ben would earn him back everything he lost and that a chilling "you can find your own way home" comment.
• Ben believes the team can do it without Rosa. He encourages the team to go back to Vegas and earn back not only the money lost but make their own money without having to give half the winnings to Rosa who technically wasn't doing anything or putting himself at risk. Unfortunately, they do too well and get noticed by a casino-hired security man named Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne). They catch Ben and Cole and his henchmen mess him up. Ben returns to Boston with his face bruised to discover his apartment ransacked, all his money gone, and a notice from the university that as he's been dropped from Professor Rosa's class he is no longer eligible for graduation this year. Basically, he's lost everything.
• The only chance left is to take Cole Williams up on his offer to bring back Micky Rosa whom Cole has been trying to nab for decades back from when he took a casino Cole was providing security for nearly the largest amount of money won in a single weekend.
• The successful execution of the plan requires Ben to play the dog with his tail between his legs and seek forgiveness from Rosa. He does so brilliantly as the master suddenly becomes the puppet. Ben convinces Rosa he's changed his ways and intends on going back and winning one more giant payout for them all, but, of course, his hook is that they will need Rosa to be one of the "Big Players". Ben knows Rosa too well, and he knows that ultimately, his ego will take over. Rosa fatally mistakes the final hook in the puzzle for admiration of a mentor.
• Once back in Vegas, they set up to play their final game and they do awesome. Their plan involves a switch of the bag of winnings. When they get caught by Cole, they give Rosa the bag of chips and flee. What he doesn't know is that he has been given a bag of chocolate coins, not real chips. Ben and Jill Taylor (Kate Bosworth) have the real chips.
• Cole has promised to let Ben keep all the winnings, but as one might not predict he goes back on his word and keeps the chips as his retirement plan leaving Ben and Jill with nothing but their lives and a free pass out of Vegas.
• Rosa opens the bag of chips in the limo to find the chocolate money and then that the driver of the limo is not who he appears to be. He gets to meet up with an unhappy Cole Williams face to face.
• Prior, though, as part of the deal, Rosa restores Ben's credential at M.I.T. and Ben returns with an amazing story of how he won millions counting cards in Vegas only to lose it all in hopes this will secure him the scholarship he needs to Harvard Medical School.
