Spoiler Points:
• Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski) falls for Lexie Littleton (RenĂ©e Zellweger).
• Dodge Connelly (George Clooney) falls for Lexie Littleton.
• But Lexie Littleton is a reporter first, and she eventually has to tell the true story as admitted to her by Carter Rutherford one evening when he's both a little under the influence of both her and illegal spirits, that he's not really quite the war hero he's been made out to be.
• What really happened was that he was in a trench in the forest, fell asleep, and was abandoned by his troop. He awoke to find himself in a trench now occupied by German soldiers. He sees no way out of the situation, so he stands up and starts shouting "I surrender, I surrender" in German. Not realizing he's not one of them, the other soldiers join his chorus and all end up surrendering to his unit. The story, of course, go out of hand in the re-telling making it sound like he got an entire German battalion to surrender at his feet.
• Of course, Carter is crushed by the story.
• But, it doesn't halt him signing on with the Chicago team abandoning Connelly's Duluth team the week before their division rival match up.
• Carter wants to come clean, but he is persuaded to just let the story die out.
• To try to win Lexie's heart and protect her reputation, Connelly sets up a trick to force Carter to tell the newly Congressionally appointed commissioner of Football that the Lexie's story is true.
• In the Chicago – Duluth game, the field conditions are just terrible and the offense has been limited to 3 points on the board all Chicago. In nearly the last play, Dodge comes up with an idea to save the game for Duluth. In effect, he has his own player cover with so much mud that he's unrecognizable. When the play is run, his camouflage and behavior persuades the Chicago defense to think he's one of them. Therefore, when the ball is thrown, it looks like he's intercepting for Chicago, when really he's catching the ball in the end zone for Duluth.
• Of course, Lexie Littleton and Dodge Connelly end up happily ever after together.
