88 Minutes (2008) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.00
Review-lite: Exceptionally taught, the psychological thriller 88 Minutes proves Al Pacino's still got it. Held up seemingly forever in release date limbo, this Jon Avnet directed tribute to cell phone technology and forensic psychiatry run amok introduces us to Dr. Jack Gramm, an illustrious professor (Al Pacino) who receives an anonymous call indicating he has but 88 minutes to live. The film works on multiple levels as a heart-pounding, unnerving, psychological thriller in a return to the mainstay style of the great thrillers of the 1980s and early 90s. Leatherheads (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.00
Review-lite: George Clooney's Leatherheads delivers exactly the kind of movie they used to make back in the 1920s. Without special effects, using a simple story with "aw shucks" values, chiseled features, and complete sass, the result represents a film that could have cozied on up to the sofa and been read aloud as a radio play. Practically ripped from the headlines of 1925, Leatherheads is the mythical story of the founding of professional football, and the idea of college football players going on to take the sport professionally was just being hatched. Featuring George Clooney as the down-on-his-luck football player Dodge Connelly working for the Duluth, MN team who gets an idea to bring war hero and Princeton football phenom Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski) to play for his team while the Chicago Tribune editor sends reporter Lexie Littleton (Renée Zellweger) to get to the bottom of the story. Made of Honor (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $10.75
Review-lite: This bland, predictable, romantic comedy lacks breathtaking romance and wise comedy leaving Made of Honor viewers wondering if it might better have been called Made of Mush. Hardly distinguishable from 27 Dresses, the film lacks the punch and freshness of P.S., I Love You—the best romantic comedy of the last 5 years. Michelle Monaghan and Patrick Dempsey portray the best friends turned bride-to-be and Maid of Honor who discover through her Scottish fiancée's Scottish traditions that maybe they really are meant for each other. The supporting cast does its best to keep this lifeless film alive amidst an obvious and predictable journey to the only logical conclusion. Director Paul Weiland makes the movie look good and occasionally fun, but it's all a façade for a redundant, recycled, derivative film. (click for full details and complete review)

Speed Racer (2008) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.25
Review-lite: Don't see the Wachowski Bros. Speed Racer on limited sleep or without movie snacks. It pushes the envelope and sets a new bar of expectations and possibilities in filmmaking, though the overall impact of the story falls far short of that of The Matrix. Obviously, the originality factor in some aspects was predicated by a desire to hold true to the look and feel fo the original series which the film does. The overall impact, however, therefore is not as keen. Definitely NOT a movie for everyone, The Wachowski Bros. nonetheless, have created an occasionally motion sickness inducing, either 200% cheesy or 200% quotable, but always psychedelic tribute to a cult-classic cartoon show which forces viewers into the future of filmmaking and the cinematic experience itself much as George Lucas's Star Wars redefined expectations when it came to special effects in film back in the late 1970s.
