Spoiler Points for Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D
• Professor Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser) is losing his funding and lab due to a lack of viability in proving the theories of his late brother, Max.
• At just the same time, Trevor's sister-in-law Elizabeth (Jane Wheeler) gets the idea that a week with his nephew, Sean (Josh Hutcherson), before their move to Canada, would do them both good.
• She leaves behind a box of Max's old stuff when she drops off Sean at Trevor's home.
• Early skepticism about the two becoming friends are whisked aside when the box of artifacts and, in particular, a Yo-Yo and a copy of Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth brings the two to the conclusion that they need to follow a trail of breadcrumbs left by Max to Iceland. There, they suspect they will discover what happened to him that fateful night 10 years earlier when he mysteriously disappeared.
• Upon arriving in Iceland, they find the center where Max's colleague and co-conspirator worked on Max's theories on geology. Max's colleague's daughter however was all that remained of the center, and she, Hannah (Anita Briem), agreed to take them to find Max's seismic sensor located near a long extinct volcano.
• A lightning storm forces the trio into a cave and then entraps them with rubble closing the mouth. They travel inward hoping to find a way out. Eventually, they find themselves in a an abandoned mine. A mining car ride leads them further inside, and to a cave filled with precious gems. Unfortunately, they don't realize they are standing on a mineral sheet to thin to support their weight. Slowly at first, but then without warning, it shatters and they plummet thousands of feet into a cavern in the center of the earth.
• Once safely down, they are met by a flock of bioluminescent birds. Soon, they realize that that which they see is the basis for Jules Verne's acclaimed novel. Clearly, his leading character had been here and back to report it to Verne.
• Exploration reveals that Max, too, was there, and somehow died trying to escape to the surface. They bury his body under a pile of rocks. Soon, they notice the temperature is rising and they will be engulfed in lava. They follow a plan they discover in Max's notes to cross the underground ocean and skyrocket up a geyser tube.
• They construct a raft with a kite sail and depart.
• They are attacked by flying fish, and in a brave attempt to help them all, Sean accidentally is launched free of the raft only to crash land on the opposing side of the ocean. Trevor and Hannah sail across in search of him.
• The trio won't be reunited until after Sean goes toe-to-toe with a T-Rex, and Trevor comes to rescue him.
• They are met by Hanna floating in a T-Rex skull.
• When the water for the geyser never comes, they ignite the magnesium in the cave releasing water that then shoots them out of a volcano in Italy where they crashland in a vineyard. Sean offers the owner up a big glass crystal aka a diamond to keep him happy.
• Trevor writes about his discovery and adventure in Scientific America much to the dismay of his colleague. Using the money from the gems that Sean collected and the discovery of the center of the earth, Trevor plans to start a new research lab.
• Just before the film ends, Trevor gives Sean a new book of his father's, this one is all about the lost city of Atlantis suggesting the possibility of a sequel?
