9:50 pm
Susan Sarandon gives the nominees for Best Actor Motion Picture Drama. [see all the nominees]

The Golden Globe goes to Mickey Rourke.
[note: mEd does not begrudge Mr. Rourke, but honestly, how Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button...Frank Langella as Nixon? Oh yeah, and Mr. Rourke, what was with the sunglasses? Are you trying to take Elton John's place for most flamboyant eyewear?]

[note: Kate Winslet is so stunned. No one's given such an acceptance speech since Sally Field's "You Love Me" speech. She's so visibly shaken, she forgets, at first, Angelina Jolie. Leonardo looks like he's in love, for real, too bad, she's married, Leo!]

The Golden Globe goes to Colin Farrel, In Bruges.
[note: mEd thinks this was a real coup for Colin Farell who is one of the more deserving actors of his day. His role was genius. His acceptance speech was charming if not frenetic. The only inexplicable thing is how on earth James Franco got nominated--we love Franco, but Pineapple Express?.]

9:16 pm
Sigourney Weaver presents scenes from the nominated drama, Revolutionary Road.

9:12 pm
Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson arrive to announce the nominees for Best Director. [see all the nominees]

The Golden Globe goes to Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire.
[note: mEd wonders if you're sensing a theme? Should not we expect the HFPA to throw so much affection toward this glorious, but internationally appealing, film?]

8:54 pm
Martin Scorsese takes the stage to present the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Achievement in Film.

The Award goes to director Steven Spielberg.
He talks about how he got inspired by seeing his first movie, The Greatest Show on Earth which was directed by Cecil B. DeMille. The train wreck in the film inspired him to get into recreating the train wreck with his own train set. After crashing the train, he filmed it to appease his father who was tired of him wrecking his train. This set off his movie-making career.

Chris Nolan accepts on behalf of the amazing and gone-before-his-time, Heath Ledger. A brief scene of his amazing work was shown.
[note: mEd is thrilled that Heath Ledger was recognized in this way for his incredible performance as The Joker. He was absolutely astounding. The mistake, in our opinion, is that he should have been nominated for Best Actor in a Dramatic Motion Picture not supporting actor. And, the award for supporting actor should have gone to Robert Downey, Jr. in that case.]

The Golden Globe goes to Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky.
[note: mEd feels this is typical HFPA. Clearly, Meryl Streep deserved this award, but Ms. Hawkins was a clear 2nd choice. She put the award down, it's too heavy. But who saw her movie? Ok, typical. Still, she was so gracious! A very deserving person. Get a copy of this film now, if you can.]

7:39 pm
The Jonas Bros. arrive to present the nominees for the Best Animated Feature. [see all the nominees]

The Golden Globe goes to Wall-E.
[note: mEd feels that this was not the correct choice. Kung Fu Panda was the far better movie.]

7:36 pm
Ricky Gervais mentions he's a bit annoyed that he's not been nominated this year. He's the most hilarious presenter so far. He seems to be drinking something that looks a lot like beer. He introduces Happy-Go-Lucky amidst jokes of having relations with 200 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
