Rxns to 79th AMPAAS Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Nominations

Reactions to the 79th Annual Academy Award® Nominations
Category:
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role

Nominees:

Adriana Barraza in Babel (film review)

comment: Ms Barraza did an excellent job with her portrayal; yet there seems no compelling reason to nominate her. Hers was a bit of a harrowing one to portray as she wanders the desert looking for children she left behind to find help in a ridiculous situation of adults make very dumb decsions.

Cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal (film review)
comment: If this was supposed to make Cate Blanchett feel better for not receiving a nomination for Best Actress for her incomparable role as Lena Brandt in The Good German, forget it. Plain and simple she deserved both nominations.

Abigail Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine (film review)
comment: Did the members of the Academy see Pan's Labyrinth? If not, how did it receive nominations in other categories? Abigail Breslin is darn good, she's no Tatum O'Neal, she's no Jodie Foster, she's fine.

Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls (film review)
comment: Absolutely no way she couldn't be nominated!

Rinko Kikuchi in Babel (film review)
comment: Actually the only performance in Babel worthy of consideration. Yet, again, when I think of Pan's Labryinth's three amazing performances by actresses, I wonder if Ms Kikuchi really stacks up, and I cannot see how.

Who's missing?
  • Lola Dueñas from Volver--a far better choice than Adriana Barraza
  • Ivana Baquero from Pan's Labyrinth--a far better choice of 'kid' actress than Abigail Breslin
  • Paula Patton from Idlewild--should have been considered before Adriana Barraza or Abigail Breslin, but the Academy totally missed the boat on Idlewild in general.
  • IIvana Baquero and/or Maribel Verdú from Pan's Labyrinth--would have been a better choice too than either Adriana Barraza or Rinko Kikuchi
