Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.00
Review-lite: The Brothers Strause rekindle the story in this sequel to AvP which finally united in film the mythologies of the Predator and Alien universes as they had been in comic books for years. A Predator ship overrun with Aliens crashes in the mountains fo Colorado near Gunnison. Aliens escape and begin to overtake the town, while a Predator 'Clean-Up' man is sent to eliminate evidence of the incursion. Shane Salerno writes a better script with better human characters than the genre typically has gotten since the great days of the first two Alien films—still regarded as the most frightening and dread-filled, sci-fi horror films of all time. Part fable, this film offers up some good lessons while serving as a worthy basis for transition to what might be the best of the AvP films to come. (click for full details and complete review)

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.75
Review-lite: World class director Sidney Lumet brings his touch to Kelly Masterson's tantalizing script about two brothers who attempt to commit a robbery but everything goes terribly, terribly wrong leading them to face their own selves and the consequences of their heinous actions. Unfortunately, there are too many holes in the plot, and too little is given to provoke much empathy for any one character in the film. The net result is strong performances from Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney, and Marisa Tomei, but with out much pay off in the end (which, in this case, is the beginning, but with a trick). In many ways, Find Me Guilty is a better swan song film for Sidney Lumet's filmography in many ways that Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. (click for full details and complete review)

Charlie Wilson's War (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.50
Review-lite: Director Mike Nichols takes Aaron Sorkin's powerful political commentary script based on the life of real Texas Congressman, Charlie Wilson, and illustrates some of the major and compelling pitfalls of the USA's overt and covert operations of the past 40 years. Starring Tome Hanks as Wilson and Julia Roberts as his funder, the film challenges us to think and reconcile our government's actions with the outcomes. Philip Seymour Hoffman helps the two out as their C.I.A. liaison in their foreign affairs work. The threesome provides not only ample comedic brilliance but also wonderful gifts in bringing out the subtleties of their characters. The result is purely astute political comedy that cannot be ignored. (click for full details and complete review)

Juno (2007) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.75
Review-lite: Jason Reitman, writer / director of the super satirical and brilliant comedy, Thank You For Smoking, ventures into entirely new territory with Diablo Cody's screenplay, Juno. The perfectly-cast Ellen Page plays the title character as if they were written as one. After a casual and obviously meaningless encounter for basic exploration with a member of the track team named Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera), she finds herself pregnant. Solving her 'problem' and dealing with the consequences make up the bulk of the hilarious, but shallow, story. Her parents are 'fine' with this, and the Penny Saver finds her new guardians for her child. Mostly, things seem to work out pretty well despite some minor complications along the way. Unfortunately, the film lacks depth and fails to explore the realities of Juno's situation in today's society rendering the film less meaningful in the end. Lars and the Real Girl (2007) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.75
Review-lite: A profoundly moving cinematic experience that derives its greatness from the simplicity of its bewildering story. A young man, lost in a curious delusion believing a life-sized doll to be his soul mate, bring about a lasting change in his small Midwestern town as to what it means to be a 'real' person. In the process, Lars (Ryan Gosling), forces everyone to confront his mental illness, and help him rediscover the true person he can be. The wonderful cast and understanding direction from Craig Gillespie who seems light years away from his direction of Mr. Woodcock, prove to make Lars and the Real Girl one of the best films of the decade, let alone year.
