Cloverfield (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.00
Review-lite: Director Matt Reeves delivers a January wake up call with this mysterious event film. No longer a mystery, the Internet hype is over. The secret is out. A creature attacks Manhattan leaving a wake of destruction in its path. The film is made to look as though its shot on a home videocam by one member of a group of 20-somethings which yields a singularly unsteady cinematic experience not to be watched by those made easily sea-sick. The film is either an unqualified masterpiece or a redundant disaster film depending on your point of view. You might just have to see it to find out which it is for you. One Missed Call (2008) [PG-13]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $4.00
Review-lite: This remake of the Japanese malevolent ghost story, Chakushin Ari known as One Missed Call, misses the mark right out of the gate as derivative of Final Destination hybridized with The Grudge. While Edward Burns and Shannyn Sossamon try their best, Eric Vallette's direction takes the film down precisely the same path we've now seen just too many times to really care about how this one goes. No doubt, the film will most likely be remembered as the first and possibly worst film of 2008. The bright side is that it's out of the way, and there's almost nowhere but up to go from here. The Orphanage (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.75
Review-lite: Juan Antonio Bayona's El Orfanato (The Orphanage) is more reminiscent of Nicole Kidman's The Others than Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, still, the film is an exceptionally good and well-made scary ghost movie. Featuring the talent of Spanish actress Belén Rueda, the story focuses on the mysterious events surrounding the disappearance of a couple's adopted son, Simón who goes missing one day at a party they are hosting for more children they intend to adopt. Part ghost story, part tragic mystery, Sergio G. Sánchez's screenplay provided bone-tingling scares making this one of the best scary movies and international films of the year.
