Atonement (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.50
Review-lite: Despite immense on-screen talents and excellent direction by Joe Wright, cinematography, set-design and costumes, as well as great writing by Christopher Hampton based on Ian McEwan's novel, Atonement is not as successful as it might have been had someone realized soon enough that the story is not about the characters filled by the big name stars of Keira Knightley and James McAvoy; but, rather, about a little girl who's brilliance and fortitude cause her to commit a terrible act of injustice that ruins her life and the that of her loves ones for which it takes her a lifetime to atone. The depressing twist at the end seals the fate of this film. (click for full details and complete review)

Crazy Eights (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $9.50
Review-lite: Don't be too quick to dismiss Crazy Eights, part of After Dark's HorrorFest 2007 when, in fact, it deserves a closer look. James K. Jones and Dan DeLuca have made a very valiant attempt to weave together the psychological mystery and horror film genres with more success than the film reveals at first glance. It's certainly far better than some of the huge budget films released in 2007 such as Rob Zombie's Halloween and the aforementioned Hostel II and The Hills Have Eyes II. The Deaths Of Ian Stone (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.75
Review-lite: Unexpected chills and thrills from this Dario Piana-directed After Dark HorrorFest 2007 hybrid of The Forgotten and a Bizarro World's version of Ground Hog Day. In this case, hockey player, Ian Stone (Mike Vogel) discovers he's part of an elaborate plot whereby creatures from the underworld must kill and re-kill him every day. Two women, Medea (Jaime Murray) and Jenny (Christina Cole) have something to do with his conundrum, as does a kindly but ominous older gentlemen named Gray (Michael Feast). Halfway through, a huge twist throws everything out of balance as Ian Stone must strive to get to the bottom of the nightmare he's now living. (click for full details and complete review)

Enchanted (2007) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.25
Review-lite: Alan Mencken's score bores, the contrived plot snores, but Adams soars, Sarandon roars, and Marsden scores, still it's the chipmunk we want s'mores. Think that was too cutesy? See Disney's Enchanted directed by Kevin Lima. (click for full details and complete review)

I Am Legend (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $13.00
Review-lite: Francis Lawrence, using a screenplay by Mark Protosevich, has created a very dark film about one man's ultimate will to survive even when there's literally nothing left to live for. Probably the most viscerally frightening film of the decade, there's nearly every kind of scare tactic known from things that jump out unexpectedly to the cataclysmic fear of the apocalypse. Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville explores nearly all of the emotions one could imagine associated with being the last man on earth. I Am Legend falls into the category of being an outstanding July film, yet one of the more run-of-the-mill December films. Use it to escape higher brow Academy Award® nominees as it is one mind-numbing, effect-driven, depressing film inasmuch as it offers a satisfying, though underdeveloped, ending and an important glimpse into the future of the power of humanity to destroy itself. Love In The Time Of Cholera (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $14.25
Review-lite: An excellent cast featuring: Benjamin Bratt, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Javier Bardem, Hector Elizondo, and John Leguizamo, under the direction of Mike Newell have transformed Gabriel García Márquez's incredible and timeless novel, Love in the Time of Cholera into a beautiful film with rich and nuanced performances and a wondrous ending to behold. Sticking fairly well to the book, the film replaces pages of narrative description with longer focuses on the countryside and characters who literally leap off the script and onto the screen. Especially Javier Bardem's Florentino. It's impossible to see how Fermina lived so long without him by her side—the true love of her life. Behold the wondrous ending that restores faith in romance and the investment in more than fifty years of unrequited love. (click for full details and complete review)

Nightmare Man (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $4.25
Review-lite: In a line by line analysis, actually, James Ferris's and Tiffany Shepis's performances aren't half bad in Rolfe Kanefsky's After Dark HorrorFest contribution, Nightmare Man. The dialog is terrible as are the effects. Even so, the twists do keep you guessing and the film in the context of the entire HorrorFest serves its campy purpose. The Seeker: The Dark is Rising (2007) [PG]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.50
Review-lite: Alexander Ludwig as Will Stanton aka The Seeker of The Seeker: The Dark is Rising fame, carries this film from beginning to end. Directed by David L. Cunningham based on the books by Susan Cooper, the film tells the tale of a young boy who suddenly learns the fate of the world rests on his shoulders and ability to use his powers to travel through time to locate 'signs' that, once assembled, will make him able to defeat the impending darkness. A little too formulaic and, perhaps, derivative of the genre claimed more than adequately by Harry Potter, nonetheless, the series has potential due to the charismatic portrayal by Ludwig. There's little chance of The Seeker becoming the next Harry Potter as there are still more Harry Potter films to come in the first place, but certainly there's still a place for this good but not grand set of stories.
