In 1979, director Ridley Scott unleashed one of the most horrific sci-fi films of all time, with Alien. It featured a relatively unknown Sigourney Weaver as the heroine who would go on to fight the nasty creatures and inadvertently launch an entire industry starring the creatures designed by Swiss surrealist HR Geiger (
visit the site for more details). Alien spawned three direct sequels: Aliens, Alien3, and Alien: Resurrection. Ms. Weaver starred in all three possibly because she saw the important value of her courageous character as a role model. Meanwhile, the late 80s saw the birth of a new action thriller, Predator (1987) featuring a then lesser known Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead as a commando who has to fight an invisible hunter from another planet. Using sophisticated, advanced technology, the mythology eventually developed to suggest these alien hunters had been visiting earth for generations. The film sparked only enough gas for one Schwarzeneggerless sequel, Predator 2. Then, at some point in the very late 1980s, Chris Warner is credited with having conceived of the idea of merging the two mythologies: Aliens vs. Predator in a graphic novel series that kept the two alive in a new way and eventually led to the development of a new film, Aliens vs. Predator in 2004 and the latest sequel to that film: Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (read the
review or
spoiler).
This post, therefore, is a tribute to the legacy of both film series (Aliens and Predator) and the mega-franchise they have emerged together.
