A month earlier than previous years, on 23 January 2007, the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts, and Sciences announced the nominees for outstanding film achievements of 2006 to be presented on Sunday, 25 February 2007 at the Kodak Theatre. This change, theoretically, was supposed to increase the relevancy of the awards as they were continuing to be upstaged by other film awards. It remains to be seen if this was an effective move. Certainly, out of logic of public interest in future years, the release-date deadline for consideration in the current year must also be pushed back from 31 December to, at least 15 December if not 1 December. Next, the Academy and its members must be urged to find ways to create more opportunities nationally for people to see the short films in all short categories before the awards night. This has always been a failing of the categories and their relevance to those watching the award show.
