Movie Review of The Nanny Diaries (2007) [PG-13] 106 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $12.00
Based on the New York Times #1 best seller by former Upper East Side Manhattan nannies, Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, fans of the book and Julia Robert's audio-book reading, should be aware that much has been changed for the film version. Nan has become Annie (Scarlett Johansson), a New Jersey girl, and recent college graduate who majored in anthropology and whose single parent nurse mom, Judy Braddock (Donna Murphy), envisions her snaring a low-level-with-lots-of-upward-mobility position at Goldman-Sachs, only to find out much later, after months of lies, that the daughter who enjoyed the benefits of her every sacrifice has become a domestic servant. Nan's best friend Lynette (Alicia Keys) sides with her mother in that she should be doing something bigger and better with her life, but agrees to help keep up the charade convincing her mom she's gotten a very demanding position with a bank. The reality for Annie is that, after an exquisitely written intro set in dioramas at the Natural History Museum with an anthropologist's perspective on various cultures and their raising of children revealing her true interest in becoming an anthropologist, she's now hopelessly lost about what to do in the world....continued...

Movie Review of Resurrecting the Champ (2007) [PG-13] 111 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $13.75
Inspired by the true story of an L.A. Times reporter who discovered a former boxing champ living life as a homeless person on the streets of Los Angeles leading him to an unexpected friendship and an incredible article he entitled, "Resurrecting the Champ", the Rod Lurie-directed film of the same name stars Samuel L. Jackson as 'The Champ' in a role like no one's ever seen him before. Irony plays a big role in the film just as it does in the evolution of the film's making. Financial concerns caused the film to be shot in Calgary and re-set in Denver as the two cities bear a striking resemblance. Somehow, resetting the film in America's professional sporting Mecca gives it a different, more authentic feel than it would have had in Los Angeles. The locals' focus on their sporting heroes and constant references to John Elway add realism and ground the film in the mentality where, surely if John Elway were to run for Governor, he would win in a landslide. Denverites demand their local sports figures to be role models on every level, and the city has been criticized in the past for devoting way too much of its time and resources to its sports culture—no other city in the history of the world had built three new stadiums in the span of a decade to honor this sporting obsession. All of this makes Denver a perfect location for the film. As the re-envisioned story evolved as well, it takes on a duality delving into the lives of two men: one waning forlornly into obsolescent anonymity and the other rising precariously toward fantastic celebrity albeit solidly in the shadow of a notorious absentee father. The story truly is of fathers and sons and the ironies that bedevil their relationship as each seeks the glory and approval of the other generally leading to cataclysmic failure and lost opportunities due to entirely unrealistic expectations....continued...

Movie Review of Arctic Tale (2007) [G] 96 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.25
From The National Geographic Society comes another wonderful film about the trials of life at the polar extremes. Their last film, March of the Penguins, narrated by Morgan Freeman, was met with such an overwhelmingly positive response from audiences of all ages, despite the occasionally grim events, they immediately funded a film to take a look at life at the other end of the globe. This time, the cameras and crews were sent to the arctic to follow the lives of two of the premier mammalian species the walrus and the polar bear. Like it's companion film, this story has some very grim parts. This is life in the natural world where animals do hunt and eat each other. Walruses are not the most common food for polar bears; however, when the bears get hungry and their favorite food, seals, are not available, they will try to catch and eat most anything including walruses.....continued...

Perfect Stranger (2007) [R] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $11.00
Review-lite: Despite shared top billing, Perfect Stranger, directed by James Foley, really is, a Halle Berry tour de force film. With a shocking twist ending, the story employs the art of misdirection with the skill of David Copperfield. Chalk up some success of the twist to the uncommonly skillful trailer which aids in setting up rather than giving away too much. The story follows the personal investigation into the death of a childhood friend by an NYC investigative journalist (Halle Berry). Her prime suspect is Harrison Hill (Bruce Willis), an advertising executive with a powerful wife and a penchant for other beautiful women. With a nearly-too-plausible plot, the film's weakness may lie strictly in the times. The current political and social landscape makes this story read a bit like one ripped from the front page of any big city newspaper causing a loss of some shock value.
