Movie Review of Balls of Fury (2007) [PG-13] 90 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.00
artially a case of low expectations and partly as case of a genuinely comedic film, Balls of Fury ping pongs its way to being a better film that its crude moniker, "A big comedy with tiny balls" would suggest. From the minds for Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon of Reno 911! Fame and also responsible for the less than stellar spring 2007 film, Reno 911!: Miami, this film will have to paddle up stream, with ping pong paddles, of course to get noticed. The brilliant marketing campaign, however, may not be enough for it to surge at the box office the way it might have had it been released much earlier in the summer or later in the fall....continued...

Movie Review of The Ten (2007) [R] 93 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $4.00
Out there in comedyland there are talented people who form comedy troops or loose networks. Usually, their comedy is niche-based and appeals, actually, to a relatively select group that finds their show on a cable channel and it becomes their signature show. "Reno 911!", "The State", and Broken Lizard come to mind as examples. Every so often, members of these groups get together to make a movie that, unfortunately, only they could really love. In the case of The Ten, I can sort of picture director / co-writer David Wain chatting one afternoon with writing partner Ken Marino and their ensuing brainstorming session that came to become The Ten. After seeing The Ten, it might be safe to say, there may be some things that don't make good source material for comedy films....continued...

Movie Review of September Dawn (2007) [R] 110 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.50
September Dawn is a difficult film to critique, not just because films in general are challenging to dissect and analyze as they are complicated pieces of art where everything from the lighting to an annoying accent of one character can make or break the entire film for some people, but because the film is of the historical 'inspired by actual events' genre (which is automatically dangerous), and it has for a plot utilized some of the events from a particularly gruesome moment in the acknowledged history of one of the USA's many misunderstood religious groups, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints known as the Mormons. Meanwhile, there are two primary uses for film critiques. Some readers use them to decide whether or not to see a film, and others use them after to answer questions, clarify their thoughts, and see what others said about a film. Therefore, film critics have a tough job in cases of films like these, especially in a world where people many people are working harder and harder to be inclusive, understanding, and culturally literate against the grain of others who believe that what they call "political correctness" is nothing more than a decrease in standards. In other words, you are bound to upset a huge number of people if you come out in favor of such a film or against it. Likewise, there is concern that anything one might say about the subplot or the acting, etc. could be misconstrued as general support for the film even if it is boldly historically inaccurate. In fact, such might even cause some very famous critic to vastly over-zing a film to ensure that no one thinks he or she liked any par of it giving it 0 stars while earlier this month raving about the brilliance of Superbad, for example....continued...

Blades of Glory (2007) [PG-13] -- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $12.00
Review-lite: Has Will Ferrell gone too far? In Blades of Glory, he plays Chazz Michael Michaels, an aged, has been figure skater banned from the sport after a ruckus on the ice with co-medalist Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder). The two reunite three years later when an obsessive fan points out there's no rule excluding them from pairs competitions. Craig T. Nelson plays the coach that helps create this new duo frigid force in pair figure skating. Give the screenwriters Jeff and Craig Cox and co-directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck some credit. While the story is far too full of needlessly gross or nasty little parts that veer it far off course from being in the same league as Talladega Nights (and not nearly as hilarious), it is quite funny in parts. The film and Ferrell do go a bit over the top; but, still, it's an entertaining film. (click for full details and complete review)(click to purchase Blades of Glory)
