Movie Review of 3:10 to Yuma (2007) [R] 117 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.50
Director James Mangold delivers not just a remake of the 3:10 to Yuma, based on Elmore Leonard's short story, but a powerful update that enhances and deepens the potency and story of the original. Starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, there's irony that two non-USAers by birth (a Brit and a Kiwi to be exact) would take up the roles and arms in these diametrically opposing cowboy characters. It must have been great, great fun for both. At the core of this altered story is a triad of characters representing a complex character triangle....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of Illegal Tender (2007) [R] 108 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $11.25
Stating, "I want to make films not for Latinos, but with them, for everyone," writer and director, Franc. Reyes, of the highest grossing film ever from Sundance, Empire, notes his goals of making wide-appealing films. Illegal Tender is his second film, and focuses on two generations of the DeLeon family, formerly of New York City. Back in 1985 (did they have Tropical Skittles® then?) Wilson DeLeon Sr. (Manny Perez) was a drug dealer and puppet of small-time Puerto Rican drug lord, Javier Cordero (Gary Perez). But, as often happens, suspicions are raised, and the big boss believes that Wilson is skimming to the tune of $2,000,000....continued...or read the spoiler points...

Movie Review of The 11th Hour (2007) [PG] 95 minutes
WIP™ Scale: $14.75
In the vein of An Inconvenient Truth actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio narrates and financially supports this unnerving documentary about the continued resistance to the idea that the fate of the planetary ecosystems is at risk. Where as its predecessor dealt more substantively with facts and figures and served as the colder scientific view—who can forget former V.P. Al Gore's trip up the side of his projected chart—Mr. DiCaprio's effort takes a more holistic, artistic, and humanitarian approach to get to the same conclusion. The film's net effect, if one is in tune with it, transcends the ordinary emotionally-charged response to yield something that could actually make a difference. Decidedly upbeat toward the end when the panel of experts begins to explore the possibilities for a sustainable existence for humans with the natural world we Westerners have all but abandoned, the film begins with the gloom and doom warnings that tend to put people off rather than raising their call to action....continued...

Georgia Rule (2007) [R]-- W.I.P. Scale™ Rating: $7.75
Review-lite: An unexpected and odd film that came without much notice in one of the summer month's most electrifying with Spider-man, Shrek 3, and Pirates 3, this Garry Marshall-directed film starring Jane Fonda, Felicity, Huffman, and Lindsay Lohan, dives head-first into an incredibly volatile and controversial topic without checking to see if there is water in the pool. The result is a splattering of unfinished , disjointed ideas, strange dialogue, and a final line that has to be awarded the worst in film history. Unfortunately, it takes a long time in, despite rampant clichés, to figure out this isn't going well, and it's not going to go any better, and the best thing to do is to run out of the theatre now.
